Aventinus and gunk at the bottom?

I was at Spec's today and spied some Aventinus. I'd heard good things about this beer so I got a bottle to try it out. When I got it home I noticed it had gunk in the bottom. Is that supposed to be there? It's labeled as 'bottle fermented' so maybe it's yeast? But wouldn't fermenting...

In the back, on the first picture, by the petri dishes in the racks, are those broths? Where'd you get the solutions and what not? I never could find a generic broth online. Or do you work in some kind of lab that you got them from?

Lol a flow hood would kick ass. Have to make sure it does the annoying, incessant beeping whenever the lid is too far up or it's just not the same. Do you have any Gram staining equipment? A bunsen burner is pretty cheap (or hell, just a lighter). Inoculation loops are about 3 bucks and...

    Purchasing a starter kit

Is there a concise list of everything needed to get started brewing? Like I know I need: Airlock Carboys (6.5 and 5 gallon) Siphon Hydrometer Bottles (capper, caps, etc). and the various grains/extracts/malts/whatever to support the method you're planning on using. What else?

Kind of a technical question about fermentation.

Makes sense. Mystery solved y'all. You don't have to go home but you can't stay here.

Kind of a technical question about fermentation.

Well I realize that, I was just wondering what the oxygen was used for in the conversion of pyruvate to ethanol. (assuming that's what it's used for; I would assume so unless it's used in another pathway all together). I think the problem is that I was stuck in thinking that Pyruvate ->...

Kind of a technical question about fermentation.

Hrm, but to have them multiply wouldn't that require the consumption of oxygen for energy? That's what the sugars are for. I'm just wondering what pathway they use and why the oxygen is necessary. We need oxygen for the end electron acceptor in the electron transport chain. I'm just...

Kind of a technical question about fermentation.

But I'm curious...I've just recently (as in today) gotten interested in Homebrewing so I've been reading the Wiki on the steps. One step that caught my eye was aeration, adding O2 to the wort. Perhaps I misunderstood but I thought alcohol was the product of anaerobic glycolysis? Where as...

Mr Beer - Read all about it and ask questions

Probably would've done better to boil it or run it through a flame real quick (from a lighter or such). Can contaminate something real quick by dropping it on a floor. Whether that'll affect your brew, I can't say as I"m new to this as well. But from a scientific stand point, your wisk...
