Here is a qute from Mitch...."A note here about batch sparging, which is the technique of drawing the wort off until you pull the grain bed dry, then adding sparge water until you are over the level of the grain bed, and repeating the process until you are at kettle full. Yes, you will increase...

Batch OR Fly? Whats a sparger to do??

Hello all, just have to ask. Ive been a All-Grain brewer for a few years now and I have always batched sparged on all my brews. I was reading on the Stone Brewing website about how they make their Vertical Epic Ale. The Head Brewer "Mitch" had said that you shouldnt batch sparge because you...

First Barley Wine. Check my recipe!

Well in that case just stick with the pils. I thought you were going to get these grains from a home brew store. I would use the pils and about 3#s munich with no crystal malt. Munich will add alot of good malt flavor. Maybe even a pound or two of dark brown sugar at flameout. Just to bump up...

First Barley Wine. Check my recipe!

Looks pretty good, I would toss the pils and use all maris otter. I would use something stronger than cascade with your last two additions. You could use all centennial hops, 2oz at 15, 2oz at 10. 20# Marris Otter 1# Light Crystal 4oz Chocolate Malt Hops: Centennial 1oz @90min...

Can there really be too much hops in a brew?

Oh we are still going to dryhop. I agree bittering hops can be over done and deep done inside me I know you can over do the hops. We wanted to see what we could get away with. Thats why we did the FWH to smooth out the bitterness and not have a slap in the face bitter beer. Take Stones Ruination...

Hello all, just a question I thought I would ask. My brew buddy and I brewed up a Imperial Red Ale last night. Our origianl recipe that we came up with had 7oz of hops throught out the boil, as so 1/2oz Cent. 20min 1/2oz Amarillo 2omin 1oz Cent 15min 1oz Amarillo 15min 1oz...

New Oak barrel how long to oak for

I oak in the keg. 1-2 ounces depending on what kind of brew. Dark brews I oak longer, lighter brews only about 2 weeks. Stouts and strong beers hold up better to the oaking process. Soak the chips in rum or whisky for a few weeks to get some of that flavor in your beer.

    Safale 04 Whitebread Question?

I brewed a batch of beer on 2/5 that was 1.055 and i used 1 pak of Safale 04 whitebread yeast. I cooled wort to 60 deg and then pitched rehydrated yeast. Rack or Dump wort on notty yeast cake?

It was notty last night! I have never seen my primary bucket look like it was going to explode. This was one of the bigest beers that I have made and the first time using a yeast cake. I do have a question. I have a Black Tripple IPA that I made a few months ago. I used wyeast Belgian Strong Ale...

Rack or Dump wort on notty yeast cake?

The yeast cake had been sitting under the 1st beer that I made with for 2 weeks. I brewed the 2nd beer which was 1.105 OG, chilled it down, racked off the 1st beer from the yeast cake (1.080) then dumped the chilled wort from the 2nd beer on to the yeast cake as soon as the 1st beer was racked...

Rack or Dump wort on notty yeast cake?

The yeast cake was only 2 weeks old, had only been primary not secondary. Only thing that I can think of is that I didnt take off the krausen from the primary bucket. It was too late at night and I didnt think about it before hand. The first ale that the cake came from was only about 7%. The...

Rack or Dump wort on notty yeast cake?

When reusing a yeast cake is it better to dump the cooled wort on top of the cake or rack on to the cake? I only ask beacuse I brewed a pale ale last night and dump it on to a notty yeast cake from a previous pale ale brew. I thought by dumping it on to the cake that it would add oxygen and have...

    Comments on MO/Simcoe recipe

Looks good to me! I would maybe First Wort Hop with an once of simcoe. FWH will give a smooth bitterness and help the aroma. Other than that it looks good.I am going to do something very close to what you got. I love Simcoe!

Dry hopping an RPA w/ czech saaz...

Go for it, saaz is spicy so depending on what type of ale you made is should be good. If is light and krisp then you should be able to notice it in the finished beer. I dryhopped a light ale with spalt before and it came out pretty good. If you dont like then you will know for the future. Just...
