First BIAB and OG is way off

so i got another scale to verify how much lactose i put in. It was a 1lb bag and called for 0.6lb to be added. Putting the left over lactose in bag on the scale came out to 0.415 lbs, so it looks like I was pretty close with initial measuring. I guess the important piece now is to see how it...

First BIAB and OG is way off

Thanks for the feedback @Biscuits. You have much better calculations than me, but I did try to account for the fact that I would have needed additional water from the start. When I said in my original post that i started with "a little more than 4.5 gallons", I actually started with about 4.75...

    Looking for a starter kit

Being a new brewer myself, I will also say that the morebeer kits suggested by PADave, mongoose33, maxstout are really great to start with. The one that mongoose33 linked to is the kit i went with. The only piece I wasn't that happy with was the tiny thermometer, otherwise everything is there...

First BIAB and OG is way off

I did not squeeze the bag, but I did lift and hold over the kettle for a while to let gravity drain a good amount of liquid out. I am thinking that the lactose that was added may have created the higher than expected OG even though the recipe knew the lactose was being added. Thoughts on that?

First BIAB and OG is way off

Brewed my first BIAB batch today. It was northern brewers chocolate milk stout. Followed the directions as specified. It’s a 3 gallon batch. They say OG should be around 1.052. Mine came out around 1.066. Started with a little more than 4.5 gallons of water as they suggested and boiled down to...

    brewer's best hopnog 2017

so after 5 days in the fermenter, gravity was reading 1.014. I dry hopped in the main fermenter at that point rather than racking to a secondary. Bottled yesterday after a total time in the main fermenter of 3 weeks with a final gravity of 1.010. That should put me around 6.5% abv with an...

Log Temperature Data to Adafruit IO... and then IFTTT and SmartThings

I wanted to give a quick overview of what I have been thinking about and see if anyone else is interested. I'm new to homebrewing so let me know if I'm talking nonsense. I have looked at a bunch of software which is great, but I had a few things I personally wanted to avoid or additional...

Full boil AND late extract addition?

@brews2gf, i actually just brewed a brewer's best kit also, which is their seasonal hopnog 2017 (NE IPA). As part of their instructions, half the extract is added in the last 10 minutes of the boil. It is still in the fermenter, but color is light and looks good. I do full boils. The wort did...

equipment upgrades you wish you had from the start

Some great info here. Seems like a big pot is the most common answer when putting all the responses together. I'm super new to brewing, but after only a short period of time, these are my observations on choices i made thus far. -glad I went with morebeers kit that came with an 8.5gallon...

equipment upgrades you wish you had from the start

I did a bit of searching but didn't find a topic specific to my question. What upgrades to your equipment have you done, that you wish you had done from day 1 which would have saved money, headaches, and provided a much better beer? This is a very open ended question and am wondering if you...

    brewer's best hopnog 2017

Yesterday was a rainy day in my neighborhood so I figured I'd use the time to brew the hopnog. They list this kit as being advanced on their scale of difficulty. I am assuming this is because of three factors. The first is what they call their "steep to convert" process. The second being a...

    brewer's best hopnog 2017

After completing my first batch of morebeer's american pale ale, i wanted to get something more specific to what i really like. I also wanted to support my local homebrew store, so i stopped by today. I ended up getting a brewer's best hopnog 2017 extract kit. It's a new england style ipa. I...

    First Batch and Lessons Learned

I'm excited for this. It looks like most people let it ferment for 14 days even if it has stopped bubbling after a few. It stopped bubbling yesterday, 4 days in, but I will wait till Saturday to take a gravity reading. Leaving it for another 7 seems to help with the clarity from what i have...

    First Batch and Lessons Learned

Thanks everyone. @Rob2010SS, it is the 7 gallon Fermonster. @Dee74, I can't compare the fermonster to anything else, but no issues with it at all. The mouth is big enough to get my arm in, and hopefully having the spigot on there will work out well for racking.

    First Batch and Lessons Learned

Hi everyone. Great forum filled with amazing information. I had my first brew night last Friday in Saturday morning, and it was great. I figured I'd share a few funny notes along with a pic to make sure everything looks normal. I purchased the morebeer premium kit when they had it as a...

    Another NJ Guy

I've been reading the forums a bit and have finally taken the leap into this new hobby, which may end up as my new addiction. I took advantage of morebeer's "deal of the day" on their premium home brew starter set a few days ago which arrived 2 days after order. Great service from them...
