    North Carolina brewery liquidation...

Folks, I currently going through a family crisis which has created a serious financial hardship. I prefer to keep this matter private, but suffice it to say I would not consider auctioning off all of my brewing equipment if it wasnt a necessity. I will try to post pictures, but more than...

    1st & 2nd AG...

Sorry, I know it was long. My question with #2 is that since the beer tastes great now and has the proper gravity reading after fermenting for 8 days, is there any reason I should warm it back up and let it sit another week or two? Seems like that would be more important if I had some off...

    1st & 2nd AG...

For the record, I am relaxed, I'm not worried, and I'm having a Home glass of water...have to work in am. I just have a few questions. A little back ground, I have been gathering, fabricating, and buying all of my equipment since early October and this was my grand return to the...

Guide to Making a Frozen Yeast Bank

The problem with this hobby, is that there is too much thinking involved to work up even a good buzz. You just can't wash or freeze yeast if your $hi* faced... I know there is a way to enjoy both aspects of this hobby, but NOT until you quit...

    Aquarium pump for wort chill

the pump I am looking at is the maxijet 1200PH with an output of 295 gph (295 / 60 = 4.9). I'm sure it will work, I just hate spending 20 bucks on something that will likely not last and end up having to spend the $150+ on a march pump anyway. I'll just stick with the faucet for now.

    Aquarium pump for wort chill

sorry, I meant THIS one... If I figured correctly it should pump almost 5 gal/min (4.9). The only thing I'm worried about is how much pressure it can hold up to. Is it going to burn out by trying to force 5 gal/min through a 30 plate chiller? I plan on having my ice water in a large...

    Aquarium pump for wort chill

looking at this pump to force ice water through 30 plate chiller. Do I spend the $20 on this, or save my pennies for a march pump?

    MLT/HLT/Wort Chiller all in one?

Since I already have the Easy MLT Cooler conversion, I think I will try this method first. It will save me from having to buy the rubber hose. To think I got rid of two after my last PCS too. the coil would definitely be safer within the confines of the rubber hose, but as long as all the...

    MLT/HLT/Wort Chiller all in one?

I thought about that, but it seems to me that you could cool the wort better if it was flowing through ice cold water as opposed to water from your hose spiggot. And this would definitely use less water.

    MLT/HLT/Wort Chiller all in one?

I have been thinking of ways to efficiently cool my wort now that I have converted to 10 gallon batches. Using a keggle makes the standard immersion chiller fall short, and I just don't have the funds for the Therminator. Well, more accurately it's a choice between the therminator and staying...

    Upright vs Chest Freezers...

Definitely do NOT have the funds for the Blichmann, which is why I had to auction off one of my nads... Actually, I decided to sell a few things on e-bay and my birthday is coming up next week. I don't have the conical bought just yet, but I'm planning on being able to persuade SWMBO in the...

    Upright vs Chest Freezers...

Ok, this makes sense. Couple of questions... 1) Keeps within fermentation temps for both lager and ale? What about lagering temps...will it efficiently maintain temps around 34*? 2) Cost of materials 3) How much loss in energy...or gain in heat through the fabricated walls? Any design...

    Upright vs Chest Freezers...

Seems to me that since Upright freezer prices are more than double what similarly sized chest freezers are, that chest freezers are the way to go. However, I'm getting ready to pick up a 14.5 Blichmann very soon (I hope) and don't think the chest is going to be even close to convenient if not...

    Curious in bottle carbonation

I was concerned I had some bleeders on my first batch, so I put them all under water in a cooler to observe. No leaks, no problems. I left some of them in the water too long though, because when I cracked them open, there was some oxidation in the shape of the crimp in the cap. Iron oxide...

    Went to CVS for SWMBO.....

and $12 of that $15 was the bins? So you paid $3 bucks for everything else... What coupons are you using??

infection, what to do? with pic

Looks like a bit of nocturnal emission to me  If your primary is a female, she may have coughed right after you squirted your wort in her :rockin: These things happen from time to time... Nothing to be ashamed of.

    Cornfused...

Thanks for all the feedback. Only two questions this time... I have only brewed two batches thus far and have yet to even try one yet. I have two cases of Hefeweizen on week two in the carbing phase. The Cream Ale is still in the secondary. The thing about them is they are both the exact...

    Cornfused...

Thanks for the response. I try to keep the temp as close to 70* as possible, but I am afraid the temp likely fluctuates between 68-80 but I doubt it reaches 80 much, if at all. Right now I have my bottles submerged under water in a couple of coolers . I figure that will help moderate any...

    Cornfused...

Ok, I have been reading through the site for a month or so and while this has answered many questions, it has spawned many more. Some of which I cannot find any solid answers for. So, sorry if I ask a common noob Q... 1) Bottle Carb'ing & Conditioning: Many people say to not worry about...

How long do you leave a blow off tube on?

It seems to me that since seeing the airlock "working" is not really a good reliable sign of active fermintation and assuming you are using a hydrometer after 7 days anyway why not just leave the blow off tube in? Is there something I'm missing?
