How Many Gallons Brewed In 2021

    9320 + 62.5 for the year = 9382.5

    Storing lager at room temp

I don't practice LODO practices on the hot side (I don't doubt there could be benefits), but once it hits the fermentor, it stays void of oxygen from there after. A co2 harvester ensures no o2 is sucked back in during the cold crash, the keg is purged by the massive amounts of co2 given off...

    Storing lager at room temp

Will storing a lager at room temp undo the benefits of lagering? I've made many lagers but have always kept them chilled in a spare fridge until I'm ready to put it in the keezer. In the case of an Oktoberfest for example, this can be months. I rarely use this spare fridge for anything else, so...

What the hell is the difference between a porter and a stout?

I highly doubt the like feature existed in 2007 (Facebook didn't release and popularize the concept until 2009). They were waiting this whole time to get the opportunity.

    Final brew of 2019

I brewed my final batch a week ago. A bourbon vanilla porter. I'd love to brew something during the 12 days I have off for the holidays, but I have way to many full kegs waiting to be tapped. I brewed 25 batches this year, the most I've done in 5 years of brewing, so I'm happy.

How Am I Supposed to Keep Track of Members???

I stay incognito by using the default avatar. That, and I barely ever post. I just stalk everyone daily :)

What the hell is the difference between a porter and a stout?

I vote we wait 5 more years and then try answering this again. 12 years is not enough. We will be much wiser in 2024.

adding a ball lock post to a plastic cap

Yes, those are what you are looking for. I have a similar bulkhead to the one in your picture for a ball lock gas post in my plastic lid. It works great.

White claw.. Is it really that good or marketing hype?

Over the past year or so I've seen a steady increase in my circle of friends that are drinking it regularly. Last night I was playing sheepshead with about 20 people, and it seemed there were no less than a couple hundred white claws in the coolers, which were near empty by the end of the night...

    AB InBev Sells Northern Brewer

Sweet! They are the best LHBS I know of in the Milwaukee area. There is another I know of, but it is so far off the beaten path I felt I might get mugged going into the store, so I stick with NB for immediate needs. Most purchases are from Ritebrew though, with is only a short distance away so...

    Tactical Flashlight

I keep at least a dozen tactical flashlights on my boat, with a screen door cut into the floor, that I made water tight using flexseal.

    Min in 10 gal kettles??

I've done 3 gallon batches before using my 10 gallon cooler mash tun and 15 gallon kettle. No issues, except the excess head space in the mash tun did cause slightly more of a temp drop than normal. However, if you're running a herms setup, that should be a concern. Just be sure you have...

How often do you remove fittings and clean them in a Kettle?

I disassembled all five 2-piece ball valves in my brewery for the first time in three years of service (60ish batches). Only the valve on the mash tun had some, but not a lot, of gunk. The rest were basically spotless. I always cycle hot PBW for about 10 minutes after every batch, including...

    Brewing a Berliner Weiss???

Are you planning to kettle sour? That is what I do and based on the short boil you are questioning, I assume you are planning to. Yes, it is a short boil for 10-15 minutes just to sterilize the wort. Then pitch and sour. Once desired ph/sourness is reached, it is re-bolled for 45-50. It is...

    Sparkling "Hard" water recipe

While I'm not a fan of those hard seltzer waters (White Claw, Mike's, etc), a number of individuals in my group of friends has recenly started drinking them, including my wife. So I decided to give "Pooch" a shot. I tapped the keg last night and I must admit, this is actually pretty darn good. I...

    No oxygen dry hopping

Mason jar rings/bands are magnetic. Screw a lid on a 1/2 pint jar with the magnet on the outside like proposed. Pull magnet and the whole thing plops in. Costs nothing if already have jars and a strong magnet. Only thing I'm not sure of is the tin plated steel ring reacting with the wort. Is tin...

    Empty Co2 tank

Definitely a leak. A spray bottle of star san is very effective at finding them. Just spray each connection area, wiggling things slightly if needed.

Please help me understand water volumes

Evaporation reduces the volume, but not the available sugars. So OG will increase as more boils off. If you take a gravity reading at the start of the boil and compare to the end, you will see a big difference. If you ended with less than your 5 gallon target, take a reading and if your OG is...

Please help me understand water volumes

There are three main water loses to be concerned with. First, the steeping grains that come with your kit will absorb about 0.125 gallons per pound. Second, is your boil off rate. Boiling for an hour can boil off a gallon or more per hour, based on vigour of the boil and relative humidity...
