    Challenger keg ‘challenge’

Thanks for the clarification. These are the physical realities I needed to know about. If it’s impossible to repair then so be it.

    Challenger keg ‘challenge’

Yes a ton of flux inside and out and very high heat as well. It could be that the nature of the nipple makes the solder run off and that could be exacerbating the problem but it should at least stick. Everything was cleaned and I sanded the whole working area with 220 grit inside and out to...

    Challenger keg ‘challenge’

After examining the keg closely with the boot off I found a few areas that needed corrosion removed which at that point left me with 4 small holes in the keg bottom. We tried using a tin/silver solder combo and after 20 minutes of trying we could not get the solder to bond. We could get the...

    Challenger keg ‘challenge’

Great idea. After tearing the boot off the keg bottom I discovered two pinhole leaks at the bottom. Not nearly as bad as I thought. Under pressure it does leak but I think braising/soldering some sort of metal at the nipple and sanding it down should reinforce the keg and make it serviceable...

    Challenger keg ‘challenge’

This is a brilliant idea. Hadn’t thought of it. It should be easy enough to remove the base and inspect the damage from the underside. Haven’t tried that yet. I’m quite skilled at soldering electronics but never used industrial grade tools. I’m assuming it’s easy enough to get some silver...

    Challenger keg ‘challenge’

This is why I asked. I figured JB well would solve the problem for non food related issues but aging beer is a whole other story. I’d think enough keg lube would at least keep the beer from sitting on unsanitary rubber but the consensus seems to think I couldn’t get enough in the holes at act...

    Challenger keg ‘challenge’

On the subject of keg lube - the keg does appear to hold pressure and liquid. Your collective answers may not change but would this keg be useful for aging beers as opposed to holding them under pressure. My thought behind keg lube was I could use it to keep the beer from contacting the rubber...

    Challenger keg ‘challenge’

Not what I wanted to hear but thankful for the straight truth. In my efforts to disinfect the keg I let it sit with bleach and a follow up long term treatment with star San. I think the aggressive treatment was ultimately responsible for the damage. Now I know what not to do in the future.

    Challenger keg ‘challenge’

It’s the bottom of the keg. Stainless has two small pinholes in it. It appears some rust got in and ate thru the bottom I didn’t know that was possible... Is it even possible/economically feasible to repair the very bottom of the keg? I thought Of using JB weld but I’m not sure long term if...

    Challenger keg ‘challenge’

Hi all. I have a keg that appears to have worn through the bottom to the rubber with two small sized holes. Is this keg still safe to use assuming regular sanitation or because of the missing bottom is it shot? It still appears to hold water and gas. Go figure. I have a picture but don’t...

    Unfortunate mashtun.

I shoulda known better leaving an open container in the garage. Vermin are a thing out here And they’ve destroyed way more than this. As it is They’ve chewed through the garage door gasket and are able to essentially walk right in even with the door closed. the loss of the mashtun has at least...

    Unfortunate mashtun.

So I live out in the country and I’ve noticed a nasty smell in my garage over the last week or two. The good news is found it today the bad news is it was coming from my 5 gal igloo mashtun. The mashtun is was in good shape until this. Big question is will it be safe to use if I throughly clean...

    Triple IPA too sweet...

Thats a good idea. Wont work for fruit though and that seems to be my biggest challenge. 5lbs of slurry is hard to feed without making some waves.

    Triple IPA too sweet...

A few things.... I calculated the IBU of my new tea batch at over 1600 IBU. I used a turkey baster and slowly injected 5oz of hop tea and now it's getting there. BTW I never realized how much of a difference splashing the beer messes with the oxygenation. I made a blueberry IPA earlier this...

    Triple IPA too sweet...

I went out and bought an oz of magnum and boiled it for an hour, let it cool and strained it. It's bitter as Hell itself. Problem is it looks like split pea soup. Even ran it thru cheesecloth and a double filter bag and it's still green. Not sure I want to turn my beer green. Is it ok to dump...

    Triple IPA too sweet...

@ Yowsers, I will say in agreement with you it has the flavor of a beer that needs alot more time. I compared it to a barleywine I recently brewed and they're not far off each other. I didn't expect this. I pitched with two packets of US05. I HAD NO IDEA it would explode the way it did. (I...

    Triple IPA too sweet...

I recently brewed a triple. The beer could be delicious if it was only bitter enough. I'm not sure what happened but I cant taste any bitterness at all. I dumped a dry hop bag in thinking I'd get maybe a little aroma or something. Nada, the beer overpowers it. I managed to grab a taste of some...

Fruit Beer Strawberry Alarm Clock v3.0 (Strawberry Blonde)

Quick question on this. I have not tried this exact recipe before but the version I made last year (pretty much a basic wheat extract) came in just a tad tart and it occurred to me that it might be worthwhile to try this recipe with two changes: 1. Sweeten with a bit of corn sugar to compensate...

    San Francisco starter

Quick question. I'm making a starter for a Cali Common and I'm wondering can I ferment at room temp or do I need to ferment at 62 degrees, the temp called for on the final recipe? Not sure if the yeast or the beer I don't decant will pick up off flavors in the new wort.
