    Grainfather!!

They've been good to me when I had problems. Replaced the whole unit when that reset switch died, and the chiller when it leaked, even when it was a replacement unit. Still chugging along after several years.

    Cold Crashing Nightmare!

I recently made a makeshift version of that NorCal device with 2 large ball jars and drilled lids. However, the 1st time I cold crashed my hefeweizen (totally unnecessary I know for a beer you don't need to clear in the 1st place), I sucked nearly a liter of starsan into a 5 gallon batch. Tasted...

Starsan messes up my spray bottles

1 of my spray bottles did the same thing: the mist setting converted to straight spray only. I have noticed if I left silicone or PVC tubing in a bucket of diluted starsan for a few weeks, it starts to get gooey and translucent. So the weak acid does something to these materials over time.

    Grainfather!!

Last weekend I experienced my 1st stuck mash with the GF. Brewed a cream ale/ imperial cream ale partigyle with about 17 lbs of grist and I'm blaming it on the 6-row malt due to the increased protein content. Also used corn grits and flaked corn. All in the name of tradition. No rice hulls. I...

I'd be in for one also. That thing is 1 of the 3 big PITA issues with the GF. #2 is the ball valve thing and #3 is the gaskets on the perforated plates.

I pump StarSan through the CFC before storing it. Haven't done any bacterial cultures to test its effectiveness. Are you talking about putting a hose clamp on the filter cap or is there a way to hold the whole assembly onto the unit?

Brewing non standard styles of beer?

Oh yes, and those indeed are rice krispies and blue corn flakes in the photo also.

    Epic Fail

I cold crashed a liter of StarSan into 5 gal of Hefeweizen and it won gold and 2nd BOS in our local competition.

Brewing non standard styles of beer?

Reviving this thread...Got fed up with all the various carbohydrates that are going to waste in my household and decided to mimic what I have read concerning the ancient Egyptians' brewing practices and turn bread into beer... I think they may have called it "Bouza, " or at least this is the...

    Grainfather!!

Hey, I live in FL and the tap water is never cool enough to get down to pitching temp. Get a $25 pond pump, and a bucket of ice water to run thru the chiller after the temp falls to 100 F. With this setup, I can chill it as low as lager fermentation temps in the 50's (may take 2 buckets of ice...

Hey I am bumping this question I had about step mashing via a temperature mash method with the GF as opposed to infusion mashing with other equipment as I would appreciate further input from my GF partners-in-crime regarding step mashes. Planning a 1040 ish Czech Pale Lager with 60%...

    Grainfather!!

I was just thinking along similar lines, as I had noticed I didn't seem to get a fuller body on my last hefeweizen than the previous batch by doing the sach rest at 154 as opposed to 149. I think the problem might be doing step mashes via the temperature mash in the GF as opposed to the...

    Grainfather!!

What does everyone think about the clarity of your beer with the GF? I was a BIABer for a short time prior to GF and the beer seemed to clear in the keg better than what I am getting now with the GF. I think it may be due to pumping the cold break into the fermentor? Before the last 2 brews...

Kampenken: 1. Didn't notice any problems with the boil, although I usually have a big hop bag in there. Certainly didn't drop below 212 degrees. 3. Pump the really hot water to a second bucket while adding extra ice/water and then recirculate the water after the discharge isn't that hot. Using...

Wheat wine advice - two step mash?

I did an 11% BIAB wheat wine but kept the batch size to 3 gallons so it wouldn't be overwhelmed with all the grain. I added some honey malt as well as honey. It was really sticky and alcoholic at first but with age it improved greatly after 1 to 2 months in the bottle and turned out amazing...
