Decant a yeast starter from a stirplate

Interesting topic... the affect that cold crashing has on yeast is an interesting one. Through successive generations and starters, your yeast population (along with cell properties) can change and mutate, this is normal.. a highly flocculating yeast might have a small child population of lower...

Safest light bulb heating fermenter setup

Hate to revive a dead thread but think it needs to be said there are many of us who homebrew because we love building things and solving problems. Some of us are comfortable working with electricity and build things in our everday lives. If this isn't you, then please don't do this as a first...

Bottle conditioning with WLP002 and 005

This was one of the threads that scared me off WLP002 due to all the issues people seem to be having with bottling it. I'm writing to report back after 3 weeks in the bottle, the beer is great, OG 1.050, FG 1.010 with substantial mouthfeel and very pleasant orange esters from the yeast. Roused...

    WY 1968/ WLP002 Bottling Tips

Heard all these horror stories of bottling a beer done with WLP002 and scared me off. However just did my first beer with WLP002m it has been 3 weeks bottled and it is fantastic, excellent mouthfeel, nice subtle orange marmalade flavour. I carbonated at 2.0 volumes CO2 and it has stayed that way...

American Pale Ale Bee Cave Brewery Haus Pale Ale

I made a couple changes to the recipe: - used gambrinus pale malt instead of 2-row - used horizon hops for the 60 minute addition (29 IBUs) - some say cascade at 60 leads to too much bitterness - moved the 30 minute addition to 20 minutes to get more aroma and less bitterness - dry hopped with...

    Request: Bud Light Clone Recipe

If anyone is interested I can post any of the following recipes from an old 90's brew shop: Carlsberg Light, Coors Light, Blue Light, Molson Light, Canadian Light, Bud Dry. They use dextrose as part of the fermentables in almost every recipe. Apparently people who liked these beers were happy...

    1st year centennial leaves

Great info cannman, everything you have said is pretty much bang on with my experience with the plant since the initial post. It has since grown several new leaves and all of them are beautifully green.. Didn't think about getting the leaves wet though, good idea to prevent mildew etc. Case closed?

    1st year centennial leaves

Hi all, Started a centennial rhizome inside a while back and planted it outside about 3 weeks ago. The lower leaves seem to be whitening/browning a bit. Upper leaves look fine (so far). Can anyone give a diagnosis? We just had our first couple of days over 25 degrees (77F) and it gets a lot...

MLT: Using rubber hose inside braid

Well you guys were right! The rubber tube with holes inside the stainless braid immediately led to a stuck sparge. Had to pour the water into another vessel, scooped out most of the grain. After removing the rubber hose inside and putting everything back the lautering went beautifully. Take care...

MLT: Using rubber hose inside braid

Thanks for the reply, this is good to hear before my brew day on Monday. Here are a few pictures if anyone is interested in how I made the filter braid, hopefully it helps someone out: removed inner rubber hose from stainless braid drilled holes all the way through the hose, turned 90...

MLT: Using rubber hose inside braid

Anyone use the technique in the following video to make a stainless braid filter for their mash tun? He puts a bunch of holes in the rubber hose, then puts it back into the stainless braid. Supposedly it prevents the braid from collapsing and prevents stuck sparges...
