    A Brewing Water Chemistry Primer

Ajdelange, Thanks for the response. I was able to calibrate my ph meter so, thankfully, I didn't mess that up! I guess I misunderstood the add 1 and double for hoppy beers... I brew my IPA frequently so i will try again and scale back on my additions.

    Water chemistry Primer questions/advice

I have recently brewed two IPA's with water adjustments being the only variable. With the first batch I added 5.2 stablizer (my standard practice) and for the second I added 3 tsp of Calcium Chloride, 1.5 tsp Gypsum, and .3 lbs (2%) of Acidulated malt roughly following the recomendations from...

    Splitting yeast vial

So I decided to give this a try. I made a 1000 ml starter (1000 ml clean water, 100 grams DME and some yeast nutrient boiled for 10 minutes, cooled and then pitched White Labs Cali Ale Yeast - WLP001). I used a stir plate for 48 hours and then let it settle for 24 hours. I poured about 600ml...

    Graham's English Cider

This sounds like a great recipe. I am a little unclear about topping off the secondary with juice. Is this to eliminate headspace or is it an important ingredient at this point? If so, is there an ideal amount to add?

Recent trip to STONE Brewery in San Diego

I second the Alesmith vote! Stone makes great beer. Green Flash West Coast Pale Ale is phenominal. I had the opportunity to attend a private Alesmith tasting this past summer that featured their Speedway Stout from different years, among a few other aged beers. Alesmith is awesome!

    Med. vs. Heavy weight Aluminum

I am planning to buy an aluminum pot from the restaurant supply house online. They have a medium weight 40qt for $33 and a heavy weight 40qt for $53. Can anyone tell me if the medium weight is all I need or if I should spend the extra $20 on the heavier pot? Thanks in advance for any advice...

    stock pot options

Check out these prices at restaurant supply house for aluminum pots. I saw this link from someone else on another thread. Cookware:Stock Pots I am getting ready to buy a pot myself. Does anyone see any problems with the 15 gallon pot for 5 gallon batches? I plan to start with 5 gallon...

How Many Brewdays per tank of Propane?

I have read several threads about propane burners, btu's, aluminum vs. stainless, etc. I am interested in going all grain and plan to purchase a propane burner and a 10 gallon brewpot for 5 gallon batches of beer. My LHBS owner tells me that he gets two brew days out of one tank of propane. I...

    TAP-A-DRAFT: first impression...

I am now on my third batch using TAD. I added the better caps and still experienced some leakage in one of the bottles after five days. I decided to hook the bottle up to the TAD dispenser and force carb it so that i wouldn't lose very much beer to leakage. The beer was great right away! Good...

    Liquid vs dry extract

I have used both LME and DME with success. The DME was difficult to dissolve in hot water but i recently read in Palmer's book that DME dissolves better in cold water. LME is definitely better for late addition extract because it dissolves easier in hot water. I plan to try a recipe that...

    Does my aerator work?

I dipped the stone and tubing (just up to the filter) in sanitizer right before i put it in the fermenter so that must have slowed the flow. Do you put it in straight from removing the paper towel?

    Does my aerator work?

I bought a Whisper aerator from MoreBeer and tried it out yesterday. Should I be able to see bubbles coming out of it in my fermenter? The instructions cautioned against excessive foaming but it did not produce any foam at all and no visible bubbles while it ran. Oh, and, the pump was plugged...

    TAP-A-DRAFT: first impression...

I am on my second batch using TAD. The first batch was a wheat beer that was good but had poor head retention. The bottles leaked some when i conditioned them on their side (as recommended by TAD). I just bottled my second batch and have noticed that one of the bottles does not seal well...

    PayPal?

Awesome! I originally tried to use PayPal with one site and called their customer service to find that they did not accept PayPal. I just loaded the PayPal plug in and now i am all set. The plug in allows me to use PayPal anywhere that accepts credit cards. Thanks for the advice all.
