7 foot trellis - what will happen?

I Have a little experience with vineyard Trellising and would suggest placing horizontal support cable about 8-10 inches apart like a ladder and as your bine grows up, simply train it into a zig zag pattern till it reaches the top. It will get the growth and sunlight it needs and you will get...

Drying Hops in a shaded Greenhouse

Well the only idea i have left is three 48 foot by 8ft.wide by 8ft. tall inside insulated box trailers i have with aluminum slotted floors. I was thinking i could make the drying racks with wheels to align with the grooves in the floor to enable the racks to be removed, loaded, then rolled back...

Drying Hops in a shaded Greenhouse

I Appreciate the different opinions. I'm also looking at the option of drying the Hops in a large drum dryer that is heated with Propane manifolds. I have a friend that lives in Nova Scotia that builds Turning drum incinerators for waste disposal systems and in talking with him i think i could...

    New hop trellis/hop growing adventure

For the Cedar poles i have ready so far, i bought a couple of 80 lb. roofing tar bricks that come wrapped in a piece of card board. You can get those from any commercial roofing company. I got a 30 gallon steel barrel, if you decide to try it you can build a fire outside somewhere safe. When...

Drying Hops in a shaded Greenhouse

The Shading material that covers the greenhouse blocks 89% of the sunlight but still allows a close range of 100 degrees temps. I Noticed that if i cool plants from the bottom up the temps linger but circulate better in the dome shaped house. I Have a bunch of 4x6 drying racks that are built...

Drying Hops in a shaded Greenhouse

I'm trying to work out methods for processing Hops before i actually go into production to make sure there are no serious or costly surprises later. What i have is several Greenhouses that i can install portable drying screens to layer the hops on with moving fans underneath each stack. The...

    Picking/Harvesting Hops questions

I have two extra greenhouses i'm not using and don't see why i couldn't build hardware cloth racks with the tons of wire i've accumulated over the years and with no fans running the temps average 90-110 degrees, with two 22 inch box fans i can get the temps down to 75-80 degrees, so i'm guessing...

    Trellis wire vs. String Risers

Because of living in such a remote area i'm forced to improvise almost everything i have. From my greenhouses to irrigation system that pumps from a Glacier spring in my basement to building my own tools. I Took a snow blower drive unit and welded a dump cart frame with swivel wheels on the...

    Picking/Harvesting Hops questions

No phone here, just a Tv and ASUS Chromebox connected thru the Sat. TV. We don't use a phone much. Too much Amish blood in me is suppose...lol. It's better if everybody learns what we are trying to do so maybe we can work out a dirt cheap solution to harvesting. Those commercial pickers are...

    Picking/Harvesting Hops questions

An old fashioned winnower would work. As the cones drop down a fan would blow the leaves out the side. You would just have to adjust the blower speed to not knock the cones out with the leaves. Maybe a variable speed / dimmer switch or a woodworking tool speed/power adjustment switch.

    Picking/Harvesting Hops questions

What i'm thinking of is something i used to strip grapes off of the vines. It's two sections of 2x4 inch fence panels 36 inches wide mounted in a steel frame with it shaped like a funnel on the leading edge laying in a horizontal position. As you drive along down the rows the vine is removed at...

    Picking/Harvesting Hops questions

I'm in the learning process and am developing ideas for my own Farm and want to know when harvesting hops when the Hops is ready about how much tension or resistance at the stem does the Cone usually give? Will the cone break apart easily above the stem if it's grabbed there? And finally if...

    Trellis wire vs. String Risers

I Have a pile of rusted steel I-beams that i was thinking about cutting a 4 foot chunk off and burying at the ends of each row and attach the cable to that, but i think it might be more work. As for the cedar trees , thats about all i have growing is cedar and some hardwoods. I Have a swampy...

Come on spring...helping the hops along with the Bobcat

We have 9 feet of snow here in Downeast Maine with snow drifts as high as two stories. I've got a logger coming in soon to start popping 13 acres of scrub trees out so we can get started setting poles. We can't even see the fences or small out buildings. My neighbors entire sheep herd has died...

    Trellis wire vs. String Risers

Well i've been reading just about all week. Mostly the University of Vermont's Hops program and still don't see any serious hurdles to making this happen. I've got a Hydraulic bending machine and the stainless heavy gauge wire for making the clips, i can get the jute in bulk, i have 1300 cedar...

    Hi All from Downeast Maine

We are mostly in to vegetable farming and some grains, but here lately my aged back isn't cooperating with hand harvesting barley. So i need to get a cash crop. I Give away so much fresh vegetables to food pantries my profit for improving equipment just isn't there anymore. Thankfully i own my...

    Trellis wire vs. String Risers

So all i need is jute with the hooks and i'm all set right? I can use the miles of stainless for grape vines. Would it be too much competition to grow grape vines on lower trellis wire with hops climbing above them growing in the same row? Kind of like Bio- dynamic shared growing space...

    Trellis wire vs. String Risers

We will be attempting to install 13 acres of Hops trellis in the next two years and after i get the 20 foot poles installed and run the overhead support cable. I want to use Stainless steel wire with hooking clips at the top and bottoms to remove the top and lay the entire vine down on a long...

    Hi All from Downeast Maine

We are a 23 acre Organic Vegetable farm looking to diversify in Hops production. We are wanting to clear 13 additional acres for Hops production using Permaculture and some Bio-Dynamic Methods.
