Best Hazy IPA recipe you've ever created/brewed

Treehouse doesn’t distribute or wholesale their beers except directly from them in MA. So if you find anything by them in a bottle shop, that’s illegally being resold. Not only that but I wouldn’t trust that you’ll get a fresh (or maybe even real) can. I’m far from an expert but I’ve had a...

    Tilt Hydrometers

Did you try seeing if you could get a reading with the conical outside of the fermentation chamber? I can get a Tilt reading at about 10-15 feet of my Spike conical. I don’t have it in anything else.

New England IPA "Northeast" style IPA

Thanks for the info! I’ve always wondered about mash hopping. I’m going to go out and get the types of hops you (and the literature you forwarded) recommend. Can you also recommend a mash hopping rate, ie how much I should add in a 5-6 gallon batch?

New England IPA "Northeast" style IPA

Hi everyone - I recently got some of the Nectaron hops that SanPancho had divided up (thanks!). I’m about to brew up a fairly standard NEIPA recipe using Cosmic Punch. I have never used either Cosmic Punch nor Nectaron. I was wondering about hops you all would recommend to go with it. I have...

    Favorite conical??

Other than the pressure transfer kit, as Jag75 mentioned, the racking arm and lots of TCs and gaskets. You can never have too many of those. I also built a no-oxygen dry hopper (basically this one: My DIY Dry Hopper for Homebrewing). It was probably overkill for my first conical fermentation...

    Wort chillers

Man, you really have a bone to pick with wort chillers! Are you really picking brains or a fight?

Tilt reads 1.003 in tap water.

The other thing is that your hydrometer’s 1.000 reading in 74 degree water is either adjusted to 1.003 (BeerSmith) or 1.002 (Brewer’s Friend) because 60 degrees is the calibration temp. So the Tilt’s reading of 1.001 - 1.003 certainly seems within the margin of error. Like others have...

What NA Beer are you drinking now? And what NA beers are you liking?

I haven’t tried the Free Wave but I liked Athletic’s Run Wild. And there are a ton of great reasons to drink (good) NA beers. One particular benefit to me - after a long run, it’s an awesome recovery drink. It provides carbs and sugars but it’s not too sickly sweet like Gatorade or other...

    Favorite conical??

I recently finished fermentation on a NEIPA with my first use of my CF5. I’ve always used buckets (both plastic and then an anvil SS later) and I’ve had significant oxidation of the batches, to the point where it looked like dingy wash water rather than the vibrant hazy yellows and oranges of...

Spike Conical- observations and best practices

You can order one: https://spikebrewing.com/collections/conical-accessories/products/tc-thermowell I recently got a CF5, my first conical. I had a glycol chiller already and with the coils and thermowell it worked out great!

making a starter with a partial package of dry yeast

Are you asking about the ongoing “vitality” starter process or harvesting commercial yeast? I guess it ultimately doesn’t matter as I don’t think they are exposed to air and potential wild yeast that much. With the vitality starter I store pretty quickly after decanting. With dregs I guess there...

making a starter with a partial package of dry yeast

Yeah I make “vitality” starters all the time. If I’m looking for a 1L starter for brew day, I’ll make a 1.5L starter and save the 0.5L in a mason jar to make the next 1.5L starter and so on and so on. Many of these started from dry yeast packets. Since these have been propagated before...

    Falconers Flight = Armpit?

Heh I’m trying to figure out what jrgtr42 is reacting to because even in 2013 the 2011 crop was kind of old. For relevance sake the only time I used Falconers Flight I got the oniony aroma of stale or old hops as well. That was in 2015 I think? They were not from the 2011 crop (or were...

Best Way to Install Airlock Grommet in Bucket Lid

I’ve drilled many holes in bucket lids and it’s never been a mess at all.

Newbie Query - Did I ruin my beer by stirring it too much right after pitching?

What type of beer and what strain of yeast is it? Like others mention above, it’s highly unlikely to be an issue. The farther from the boil you get temperature-wise, the bigger the need for sanitizing becomes but if you used a clean spoon or other stirrer, that shouldn’t be an issue. To me...

    BIAB Beginings

Heh I remember a buddy in college (probably ’96) got one of those and we filled it up before we went home on winter break. Basically all you did was filled up the bag with water and let it ferment. I think it came pre-hopped. It was awful!

    New Tilt battery life??

I’ve had a Tilt for awhile (back when they were the Brewometer). The first battery lasted maybe 6-8 months. Then I went through an odyssey of replacement batteries. All of them died while the Tilt was in the fermenter. Finally I go those Rayovac ones that have been mentioned in other threads...

    BrewSSSiphon Report

I’ve had this siphon since they crowdfunded it. It’s a tank and is very easy to clean. It also racks very quickly, which is nice!

    Confirmation of closed transfer process

Hi everyone - I’m re-evaluating my processes after several lackluster and downright awful NEIPAs. I used to siphon from a plastic bucket fermenter into my keg. I am currently fermenting a NEIPA in a new Anvil SS fermenter and I’m looking into a closed transfer process that works for me with...
