Two issues with my first AG brew process

Maybe someone can help me understand how to fix this for the next brew. Problem 1 Beersmith said to achieve a 5.5 gal batch size I needed a 8.11 boil volume. But after following the recommended 3.08 gal mash in and two sparges of 3.26 gal each I ended up with 8.5 gal. What setting in...

    Fixing my starter's OG

I made my first starter this morning and ended up with a OG of 1.050 (after pitching yeast). Should I attempt to get that down to 1.040? I started with about 675mL of water and added 1/2cup of DME. According to the Dilution Tool in BeerSmith I would need to add 146mL of water to lower the OG...

Tips on getting a decent flow through my CFC without a pump?

I went through great lengths to build a brew stand to take advantage of gravity in draining wort from the BK through a CFC. But I am having a hell of a time getting a decent flow of water through the CFC in my tests. I havent even brewed a batch yet, just been testing with water. At best...

Running your CFC without cooling water

I just got my CFC like this one Seems like I have read about people running boiling wort or water through it to sterilize before each use. I am concerned running it without cooling water could melt the outer garden hose. Thoughts? Or should I just stick to warm sanitizing solution?

    Tips on connecting CFC hoses

I am having trouble connecting a 3/8" hose to my CFC without leaks. A picture is below. The hose connects to a 3/8" copper tube on the CFC. The metal clamps I am using dont create a continuous seal all the way around, something you can see if you look closely at the 2nd pic. Any ideas for a...

Drilled my SS pot today. Phew!

I drilled a new hole in my 15g SS Megapot today and thought I would share the experience. The goal was a 1/2" hole for my thermometer. I used a water hose to keep it cool and prevent work hardening. A towel was placed under it and rolled up under the sides to prevent it from scratching and...

    This manifold build ok?

I wanted to get opinions on this MT manifold I built yesterday. Some concerns I have are: 1. I used a chop saw to cut the slits, but now worry the opening of the slit may be too wide. They measure 1/8". Do you think that will let in too much crud? Maybe I should remake them with...

    15g Megapot issues

I just got my new 15 gallon megapot from Northern Brewer and may have made nasty mistake. I ordered it with the thermometer, but they mounted it pretty high up, so high in fact for the sensor wont be immersed in the 5 gallon batches I will be doing. I will also be using this pot for strike and...

    First batch notes

I started my first batch of beer earlier this week and figured I would join the community here and document my experience. Both what I did and what I felt I did wrong and can improve. After following the recipe instructions to a tee and getting the wort into the fermenting bucket, I began...
