    Lager fermenting

If you didn't do a starter then that's probably the problem. A single vial of Lager yeast won't cut it. You need at LEAST a 2L starter using a stir plate, and more if you're just shaking it every once in a while.

Fly Sparge: To stir, or not to stir

I've always stirred my mash every fifteen mintues to help avoid having hot/cold spots and so that I can check the temp to make sure it's not dropping too much. I also preheat my mash tun with a half gallon of boiling water. My temp only drops a degree or two with all my stirring and temp...

    Man, I love Apfelwein

In the original post it says there's no need to rack to a secondary. Is that for the three months or can you literally let this sit for 8 months on the yeast cake?

Carbonating off of more than one CO2 tank

The problem here is having the T before the manifold. Technically, both tanks running into the same line are connected to each other and the high pressure of one will flow both into the keg and into the empty keg. Pressure wants to equalize so it'll fill each low pressure until all tanks are of...

Thoughts on weekday vs. weekend drinking?

Funny this thread would pop up. I've been trying to drop some weight too and I find beer is a big portion of my calories per week. I would have at least 2 every night but I've since cut back. I might have one a couple nights during the week and once a week during the weekend I do whatever but...

    98% efficiency. Is this possible?

Haha me too. My MLT I built myself and the only time I've ever had it get stuck was with a pumpkin lager beer I made. That damn pumpkin is some sticky stuff.

    98% efficiency. Is this possible?

I really do feel like my fly sparge system is pretty efficient. It took me a while to figure it out to and really dial it in. Now that I have my methods down I consistently get 90%+ efficiencies. And I agree with the Sparge to mash ratio. Rinsing the grains as best you can is prime. I crush...

    hydrometer

Seems legit to me. Sometimes it can take a little time for the beer to fully ferment. Just keep checking your readings (i like to check every other day after about 5days) and when it stays the same it should be ready. Oh and don't forget to adjust your reading to compensate for temp. It's a good...

    If you hurry :)

Verdict is in. Took this over to a friends house and we all took a tasting, followed by drinking copious amounts of this brew. Turned out delicious. Perfect amount of cinnamon in the flavor and aroma. Body is excellent. Love the deep reddish brown color. Really fills me with thoughts of...

    Nut Brown...Lager

Bump I was just searching for this and came across your post. My SWMBO bought a honey brown lager and really enjoys it, so of course I offer to try and clone. It's ok. Wouldn't call it great. Very smooth and crisp with hints of nuttiness. Don't really catch any honey type of tastes, but it has...

    Tempurature question

You might a slower start but it should be fine. You're crazy living in a 68 degree home. I'm freezing at 74. Anyway, if you make a yeast starter, the yeast will have time to multiply and get acclimated to the current conditions and your fermentation will go without a hitch. Temp-wise, depends on...
