Blueberry Mead - thoughts and questions

Ok, just started a blueberry mead. I had a 3lb bag of frozen blueberries in the freezer (the tiny baking kind) and I didn't figure they were enough for even a gallon batch of wine, but throw in 5lbs of honey, and a gallon and a half of water, and a blueberry mead it will be. This is my first...

    Concord Grape Wine

This is my first batch of wine, so I'll let you know how it turns out in a year or two :tank:. 40lbs concord grapes, de-stemmed and crushed 8lbs sugar (1.105sg) Water to bring to 6.5gal 3tsp Pectic Enzyme 6tsp yeast nutrient Sulphite - as required Red Star Montrachet yeast. I don't have a...

Headroom for primary (AKA is my bucket too small!?!)

Ok, just finished getting my first batch of wine ready to pitch and I think I have a small problem. My 6.5gal brew bucket is now full to about 1" from the top. I thought I had left myself with enough headroom, till I added sugar and went oh crap. Is this going to be enough room to go ahead...

    blueberry concord wine???

I'm going to be picking an unknown quantity of Concord grapes this Saturday (a friend told me come get em before the deer do), and was just thinking, I also have a 3lb bag of frozen blueberries in the freezer. Anyone out there tried making a blueberry concord wine? If so, how did it turn out...

What to do with a bunch of grapes???

I'll preface this by mentioning I'm a beer brewer, I've never done wine. I just got offered a fencerow's worth of grapes by a guy at work if I come pick them. I'd like to do a batch of wine with them if there's enough (I took the offer up site unseen, but I'm told there should be at least 50+...

    Kegged rootbeer not carbing?!?!

I have a keg of rootbeer (rainbow extract) I made, oh, last fall I think. It's been under pressure the entire time in the fridge, and still has very little carbonation. I just cranked the system up to 40PSI to see if it would help, and still nothing. I know I don't have a leak, I've been...

    Cheap low pressure regulator.

I found this little sucker at Harbor Freight and was wondering if anyone else had considered using it as a secondary regulator? I picked one up and am going to give it a try. It is a diaphragm type regulator, so I'm thinking it should work in theory. If anyone else has tried one of these out...

    5gal boil in keggle???

Ok, it seems as though most people are using keggles for 10gal boils. I'm only doing 5gal batches, but have the opportunity to but together a keggle for free (don't even start on the ethics rants, I tried to return the keg to the local distributor when it was given to me and they told me I could...

What to sub for the apparently scarce Notty yeast???

Oh, looking to do a batch of Orfy's MMA, however, Danstar Nottingham yeast seems to be a bit in short supply at the moment. What would make a good substitute for the Notty (dry yeast only please). Thanks!!

    Apfelwein holds a head???

I just kegged my first batch of apfelwein. Is it normal for it to hold a head when carbonated? I get a thick creamy head that actually sticks around better than any of the extract brews I've done so far.

    Pitch apfelwein on cake?

How many times can I pitch more apple juice and sugar on an existing apfelwein yeast cake before I start getting off flavors? I figure I'm ok with once (at least I hope so, cause I just did...). Can I just keep pitching more juice on the cake, should I wash the yeast every other batch or so...

Very old GE Food Freezer, what to do with???

I just picked this old freezer and a couple of 1/2bbl kegs for free. I'm planning on turning the kegs into keggles. I'm not sure what to do with the freezer though. I was considering turning it into a keezer untill I opened it up to see how the shelfs came out and saw this... What the...

Was going to do some kegging tonight :(

I was gonna keg up some soda and apfelwien in my new keg system tonight, till my 2yr old daughter broke my damn nose with a headbutt :( Ohh well, trials and tribulations of having children. Not the first time it's been broken...

    White clover blossom wine???

I've found multiple recipes for red/purple clover blossom wine, but nothing for white clover blossom wine. Can you use white clover blossoms for wine? I have half my yard that's white clover (rental, not my problem :)). If I can make a batch of wine out of it, I can let the kids loose in the...

    Leaf vs. Pellet Hops

What is the difference in usage between leaf and pellet hops? Beersmith just shows a slight change in IBU's when I switch between pellets and leaf. Is that the only difference? TIA!

Building a manifold on the cheap???

I'm trying to build a 4-way expandable manifold on the cheap. McMaster is the cheapest I've found for parts that I KNOW will work. Anybody know of anywhere cheaper? I've found some possible cheaper parts though and am wondering if they will work. First up is a possible cheap alternative...

First taste of first batch of Apfelwien

After 5 weeks in my carboy, I finally took a hydrometer sample of my first batch of apfelwien. It's down to 1.002 or so, so it's not quite there yet. Tastes absolutely wonderfull though. Very smooth taste, and even though it's not quite done fermenting, it's crystal clear. It's been...

Absolute cheapest place to buy kegs???

I'm trying to find the absolute cheapest place to pick up a couple of kegs, including shipping to northern Indiana. So far, the cheapest I can find is Kegconnection.com grade B kegs. The LHBS here only sells new kegs (at $99 a pop...). I don't mind dented and/or ugly kegs, just need them to...

    Score!!!

I just got offered a 10lb or 20lb (the guy says it's about 30" tall, so could be either...) CO2 tank for free. I won't have any more info on it till I pick it up, but I'm going to go with the assumption that it's expired and needs hydro tested. How much can I anticipate this costing, and what...
