    Bootleg biology ARL

Well landed at around 1.016 from 1.066. Certainly not a cold IPA but hopefully its okay. Opted to not use the citra spectrum on this beer!!! First time have fermentation play out like this in 11 years... Oh well... I did end up adding a rehydrated packet of 34/70 and the fresh pack a arl lol...

    Bootleg biology ARL

Just an update we are at 1.036 now. I live out in the sticks. Hoping 34/70 arrives on Tuesday. This should get interesting.

    Bootleg biology ARL

Lol!!! Hey it wouldn't be fun if I didn't play around with different hops, yeast and lately even different maltsters. I appreciate all of the insight and plan to circle back as thing progress.

    Bootleg biology ARL

Yeah I'm doing the beer for a competition. I thought it would be fun to play with something other than 34/70 ideally with some esters. I was on the site and figured hey why not I've never used their yeasts because I don't do much in terms of sours etc.... I clearly didn't know what I was...

    Bootleg biology ARL

Yeah but I can't say I've seen a yeast act like that but never used this product. Usually I've found the drop continues fairly steady until within a few points and slows down. This is when the curve will flatten out. Tilts can be good or bad I suppose. I had to bump from 61 to 65 to achieve...

    Bootleg biology ARL

I hope so I put t90 simcoe and a small canister of mosaic and citra incognito in the whirlpool so I'm a bit deep on the hops pricewise for this 5.5 gallon batch! I had a small citra spectrum ready too for dry hopping with Nectaron so I was excited to see how this one would play out. The last...

    Bootleg biology ARL

So I checked today with the trusty hydrometer. We are at 1.040 which matches my tilt. I mean it did drop some from yesterday but definitely seems slow. Given it's day 5, I ordered Omega 106 and if bootleg gets the arl I can always consider pitching. I would have thought we would be closer to...

    Bootleg biology ARL

So I got yeast in Feb that was manufactured in December. I was brewing a cold IPA so planned to ferment in the 60s. I opted to do a 2 liter starter and left on the stir plate for probably four days. I pitched the started after decanting maybe 0.5 liters. Fermentation started within 12 hrs...

    Fermenting under pressure

Drew a sample at 48 hrs and it's confirmed I'm at terminal 1.011. It does smell sulfury so not sure this one will survive. I suppose I will consider leaving it on the yeast for a bit followed by cold conditioning and hope/pray.

    Fermenting under pressure

I checked og with a refractometer at transfer to the fermenter. I haven't pulled a sample yet because I simply felt this was fairly odd to me. I mashed at 151 and terminal was to be around 1.011 which is where I'm at. I do have concerns that if the sample begins to carb that the gravity...

    Fermenting under pressure

I'm at terminal gravity but plan to leave as is for likely one to two weeks. With that said terminal in 43 hours seems unusual to me. Any thoughts?

Bjcp categories for a comp assistance?

Fyi decided to go with the mixed style category and landed a 41 out of 50. I placed at the event and wanted to say thanks to those who provided feedback. It helped me reconsider where I was thinking of putting the beer.

    Fermenting under pressure

Looking revive this thread for some general input. Placed a black lager in the basement with ambient at 62. Of course warm weather hit and my ambient temps in basement are at around 66 or so. I originally pitched two packets of 34/70 with a tilt inside. Original temp at pitch was 65. I did...

Talus pairings for west coast ipa

I recently used it with strata. I could see those two and citra working nice. I know you wanted old school but just wanted to throw an option out there.

Bjcp categories for a comp assistance?

I wanted to give the beer some time 4 to ideally 6 weeks for lagers and didn't have the time to wait for the categories that were excluded to be called out. Also can't say I've observed this type of phenomenon in any of the past comps I've been in. I will admit that in the past this wouldn't...

Bjcp categories for a comp assistance?

Yeah I brewed it for the event. The categories came later and once I saw kellerbier was moved to historic I knew I'd be in trouble. I realized that the hop flavor and aroma coupled with the carahell would put it out of a lot of lager categories. Even for the kellerbier category I was possibly...

Bjcp categories for a comp assistance?

Hey folks, I brewed what I would call a modern pale kellerbier/hybrid lager. I'm wondering where I should place the beer as there are limited categories. The grist was pilsner, carahell, and some carafoam. Hop bill was southern hemisphere hops in whirlpool plus dry hopping. Yeast was urkel...
