    Want to start kegging but...

Well price is a relative thing I suppose but most start up keg kits I've priced have been around $150 and thats just with one keg. If they're throwing in two I don't think that's out of line. Keep in mind that a big chunk of the cost is a one time shot other than refilling your C02 tank. When...

Can it be too cold where my primaries are?

I've got a wheat sitting in my primary and a stout in my secondary, both carboys are in my basement covered with towels. The wheat I made last Saturday and I still have a large krausen covering the top although little activity in the airlock. The stout on the other hand is been sitting for a...

Do you put dates on your bottles/caps?

Yep, date every batch with a sticky on the cap and the date bottled.

    Fementation question

Great, thanks. I'm still getting some slight activity, some bubbling coming up in the carboy itself but nothing like it was doing all day Sunday. This is the second batch I ever used a starter versus a smack pack so I was wondering if that had something to do with it.

    Whoa. Violent Ferment.

I wish I had that problem right now :o. I had a really active one for about 24 hours and then it stopped. If it was me, I'd put in a blow off hose. I had a real active one last year that I thought would be ok and I can home to find brew all over my walls because the airlock got clogged and...

    Fementation question

I have a Irish stout I made on Saturday afternoon and used the yeast starter that I made on Wednesday. By 1am Saturday I had a nice krausen and the airlock was bubbling like mad. Monday morning before work I head down and there is no activity in the airlock and the krausen dropped completely...

    Long fermentation?

    Oh crap! Not 9/22, 8/22!

    Long fermentation?

I started up a Oktoberfest batch on 9/22, left it in the primary about 9 days and then transferred to the secondary. Last Saturday I planned to bottle so I took my FG and it still read high, 1.20. I go back down the next day to check on it and lo and behold, I've got bubbling in the airlock plus...

    Managing carbonation

    Thanks guys. Appreciate the help.

    Managing carbonation

Had a question regarding carbonation levels. I've been using the standard 5oz of priming sugar when I bottle and my brews have what I think is too much 'fizziness' especially with my porters and stouts which I don't really care for. Would reducing the amount of priming sugar say by 1-2ozs...

    Free Bottle Opener from Beck's

    Extra week in secondary?

Yeah you'll be fine. I'll leave my ales in the secondary for 2 weeks minimum and have gone almost 2 months on some so no worries.

    Is 74 degrees too hot?

In my experience, wheats fermenting above 70 will produce a lot of esters which will give your batches a banana flavor. Not that's a bad thing but if you're trying to avoid any kind of fruity flavor, try and ferment below 70. Cool water bath with some wet towels or t-shirts over the carboy will...

    Cost to brew?

What he said. :rockin: I've done mostly kits that my LHBS designs (my last personal recipies were horrid) and have spent up to $45 so $50 is not outrageous. Even so, $50 for 5 gallons of quality hand crafted beer is a bargain. Now if money is a real issue for you and it very well may be, then...

    Long fermentation?

Thanks guys. I figured it was ok just based upon past batches, the krausen usually drops within a couple days but figured I'd ask anyway. I always use liquid yeast (Wyeast smack packs) and never make a starter. I asked my local homebrew store about that and was told it's not really necessary...

    Long fermentation?

I brewed up a Pale ale last Saturday. Went down to check on it Sunday morning and there was no krausen, no bubbling in the fermenter. Checked later that day and still nothing so I gave the carboy a couple gentle shakes. By that evening, I had a nice thick krausen and steady bubbling every 5-6...

    Explosive fermentation

I have this Blue Moon clone that will have very vigorous fermentations whereas wheats and stouts don't. I made a Kolsch last month and it went crazy.

Face to Face with The Dark Lord

Yes I am well familiar with that place when I lived in the Region. Great stuff too but not for the faint of heart that is for sure. I'm jealous! :drunk:

    Banana and oxidation

    1) Should but never can tell 2) Honestly I think once you open them, its game over. 3) In my first year brewing, my kitchen sink drank more than I ever did. The biggest issue with the banana flavor is ferment temp just like everyone said. Keep your primary/secondary covered in a wet...
