How many people can actually tell hops apart?

Just pay attention to what you drink and compare distinct but similar beers. For example, one beer has Citra, Mosaic and Amarillo in it, while another has like Simcoe, Citra and Mosaic. Comparing the two you'll be able to identify some flavors and aromas that are present in one beer but not in...

New Control Box Build - Need assistance

personally I've decided to remove the main on-off switch from the control panel itself and installed it in the electrical box that is on the adjacent wall. It's a basic 2 pole mechanical switch rated for 60A (I run 2 4500W kettles simultaneously. Also we have 240V electrics here in Russia, so...

Can I use 430 stainless for brew kettles?

Sure, that's why I'm going to solder the seams (would prefer welding though, but 430 SS seems to be real pain in the butt in terms of welding) and then polish the inside. Should be fine

Can I use 430 stainless for brew kettles?

Yeah, I've already figured it out. The question is, by how much it's less resistant and which special measures (if any) should I take to safely use it in brewing applications?

Can I use 430 stainless for brew kettles?

Hi all, I'm thinking about building a bigger size brewery for a while, but finding proper kettles seems to be a problem. I'd like to get 100L sized kettles to brew about 70L at a time, but it seems to be almost impossible to find something this big in 304 or 316 stainless in this country (I'm...

    Transfer of racking

use CO2 instead. Plain air will oxygenate your beer and also you'll need an air filter as there's tons of airborne dust and bacteria that will contaminate your beer

    Smelly Buckets

Yes, buckets do smell. Can't say, if it's the previous batch, but the smell is definitely there. It helps a little to took off and clean the valve if you have one on your buckets. But anyway, can't say that this smell affects the next batch - after I sanitize the bucket, I can't feel the smell...

Saving a little dry yeast, making a starter

I'd rather consider making like 1.5L starter but pitching only 1-1.25L of it into the wort and saving the rest for the future propagation. The sachet is sealed and once you open it, you cannot seal it back good enough so eventually the yeast will spoil anyway. Making a starter from these weak...

Temp control for a large fermentation vessels

The idea with the AC unit evaporator rocks! I'll try to find something similar in my area. Thanks!

Temp control for a large fermentation vessels

Newsman, that's just what I was thinking about. Just wanted someone else to say this :) but have anyone tried such approach in practice? Generally it should work, but I'm not quite sure that the efficiency will be high enough. Although I'll probably give it a try. Another question is, when the...

Temp control for a large fermentation vessels

Hi guys! I'm planning to go bigger soon, expanding my fermentation vessels, but what bothers me, is how to cool them during the fermentation process? Currently I'm using a fridge like this with an STC-1000 temp controller. I can fit two 12-gal buckets inside and it keeps them down at low...

    Carbonating with honey

Any advices on this? Does it actually make sense in terms of giving the beer a little of honey flavor and/or aroma? I'm making a blonde ale, quite light both in color and alcohol, and my thought was that giving it some honeylike taste won't hurt. But as I don't have honey malt, I want to try...

first all grain BIAB very tart after taste

If you look at my profile, you'll see that I'm living in Russia :) Homebrewing is not quite popular here, hence not so much homebrew shops (Local? What do you mean "local"? Internet is your best friend) and the one I'm making orders from offers just a single crush. Sure I could get my own barley...

first all grain BIAB very tart after taste

I had the same problem with one of my first BIAB brews. Still not sure about the reason, but most probably it's overheating and tannin extraction. My kettle gets cold pretty quickly so I keep it on small fire during the mash. I know that's no good, but my new HERMS system is on its way, so I...

Scaling down recipes from "Brewing Classic Styles"

I use OG as an indicator. Assuming the original efficiency 70 to 75%, set batch size to match OG given in the book or other recipe source and then scale the recipe with desired size and your calculated efficiency. Should work good enough, anyway OG is tho only thing that matters here

    Need help with identifying off-flavor

Hi folks, I've brewed 2 beers last week and both of them have some strange bitter off-flavor, which I can't identify or understand where does it come from. About my beers: #1 SNPA Clone 4 lbs Pale 2-row 1.5 lbs C60 2 cans Light LME 1 can Amber LME Magnum, Perle and Cascade hops US-05 yeast...
