Question about iodine test for starch conversion

Whenever I pull a sample from the mash for an iodine test, I always seem to get some grain particles in there, which gives me a false negative for full conversion. How do you all pull samples and test without having particles muddle your test?

Not quite a newbie, but worried about my brew

It's part of the style. It uses lager yeast at ale temps like a steam beer.

Not quite a newbie, but worried about my brew

Wasn't intentional, but all I can do to keep temps lowish is put the fermenter in the basement. My next addition after my keezer is going to be another chest freezer to use for lagering or better temp control in general.

Not quite a newbie, but worried about my brew

That makes sense. First time I've used a lager yeast. Temp started at around 68 and dropped to around 64 over the course of two weeks.

    Perlick 630SS opens to easily?

I'm doing some research before I order my keezer components and have seen a few comments here and on reddit about Perlick 630SS faucets opening too easily, possibly attributed to heavy tap handles. I haven't seen many, just a couple. For those that use the 630, is this something you've run...

Not quite a newbie, but worried about my brew

Just transferred my Kentucky Common to secondary. The second I opened the top of my BMB, I caught a strong whiff of sulfer and a faint smell of c. diff (for anybody in healthcare that knows what that smells like). Nothing funky on the top of the brew, nothing else out of the ordinary. Should...

    Request: boil evaporation calculator

I guess I can start charting boil off volumes with time of the year or ambient air temps to get an idea of what I'll be dealing with. Wind isn't usually a huge factor for me, since I'm protected on 3 sides in my garage. The swing in evaporation between winter and summer has been drastic (along...

    Request: boil evaporation calculator

I've been dealing with wild seasonal swings in humidity (MN is a desert in the winter, and GA jr in the summer) that I believe have resulted in huge swings in boil evaporation. Through the winter, this wasn't that big of a deal, as I was extract brewing. It wasn't ideal, but I could top off...

Scottish Heavy Leann Laidir (Strong Scotch Ale)

Been enjoying this beer quite a bit. Just take your time in letting it carb, since the relatively high ABV beats up the yeast and slows it down during bottle conditioning. I'll definitely be making this gain. This had far more body than any of my other beers made with extract and specialty...

Scottish Heavy Leann Laidir (Strong Scotch Ale)

I tried one a couple weeks ago and it was very under carb'd. There wasn't much body there, but that was to be expected since its an extract recipe. I'll probably try again this weekend.

Scottish Heavy Leann Laidir (Strong Scotch Ale)

Just took a gravity reading 10.20 (8.01% ABV). I've had it in secondary for a couple weeks and am debating whether I should bottle this weekend or bulk age it for another month. I'll take another gravity reading on Saturday and see if it moved at all. edit: Forgot to mention that I tasted the...

Scottish Heavy Leann Laidir (Strong Scotch Ale)

OK, just boiled it, scaled to 5 gallons. I did a 30 minute partial mash with the steeping grains, followed by a 90 minute boil. Starting with 7 gal, I just barely made the 5 gal target. OG was 1.081. I increased the hops by 1/2 oz because I don't like leftovers and spaced them out (1 oz for...

Scottish Heavy Leann Laidir (Strong Scotch Ale)

Gonna try this in a 5 gallon batch. Did you age any of this further? Anything else to add?

    Munich Dunkel recommendations

I guess I should clarify, I wasn't on vacation in Germany. There was a surprising variety of brews to be had in some establishments in Thailand.

    Munich Dunkel recommendations

Got a six pack of the hofbrau dunkel tonight and it was pretty good. I kinda feel like I'm getting screwed at $10 for a six pack, but it is what it is. Think I might make a trip to total wine and spirits soon in search of this Ayinger that comes so highly recommended. Thanks for the advice.

What was your Gatewaybeer to craft beer?

Hardly a craft brew, but my love of Grain Belt Premium turned me on to Schell's Deer Brand (a pre-prohibition lager) which in turn pointed me towards the rest of Schell's and Summit's selection. Next thing I know I'm helping an Army buddy make an oatmeal stout.

    Munich Dunkel recommendations

I tried Paulaner Dunkel when I was on vacation this past spring and absolutely loved it. Since I'm getting back into homebrewing, I thought I'd try some other s as research (yeah, we'll call it research, that's the ticket) before moving forward on a recipe (very far down the pipe at this...

Just starting out: AG vs. Extract?

Just looked at some videos on AG (batch sparging in particular) and it seems super easy, especially with brewing software. I guess it seems more complicated when reading about it, but seeing it in action, its not so hard. I'll probably go with a converted cooler setup, since space really isn't...

Just starting out: AG vs. Extract?

I've been seeing quite a bit on here about BIAB. What are the downsides? I mean, there has to be some if people are still doing it another way, right? Just seems like one of those things that's true good to be true.

Just starting out: AG vs. Extract?

I've got some minimal experience from helping a friend with a few brews a few years ago, but am still extremely novice. I'm getting ready to buy my own equipment and get started. Between the time I'd helped with those brews and now, I've been lurking here and have read "How to Brew" and...
