    Upside down regulator ?

I have a new two corny keg kit from Midwest and a Sanyo 4912 refrigerator. As it happens, I can fit the two kegs, the CO2 tank, and the dual regulator in the fridge if I put the CO2 tank on the left and have the regulator extend to the right. This means that the gauges are below the regulator...

    refractometer vs hydrometer

+1. Readings were very inconsistent and often didn't agree with the hydrometer.

How much mash water when using rice hulls?

I just put together a recipe using Beersmith. Having experienced a stuck mash last time, I added a pound of rice hulls. So, I have 12.25 pounds of grain and 1 pound of rice hulls for a total of 13.25 pounds. Beersmith calculated I'd need to mash with 16.56 qts. of water. The math tells me that...

    brewing with linux

I run Beersmith on SUSE 11.0 using Crossover. It runs perfectly.

    oxygenation

Somewhere (I'm not sure where) I read that you could get enough oxygen by shaking the carboy for 15 minutes before adding the yeast. Previously I've shaken the carboy, but for less time. Now I've done the 15 minute method for my last two brews and it seems to work. My attenuation has improved...

Barack Obama Non Blond Strong Lager

I made a Barack Obama American Brown Ale. The OG was higher than the style called for, as Obama is a man with extra gravitas. We gave it away at the local Democratic club to people who made phone calls to get out the vote.

    Belgian Dubbel Brew

I just did a Dubbel yesterday. I more or less followed the recipe for Tomme Arthur's Dubbel from "Brew Like a Monk". It sounds like you did the same.

    Safale S-33 for Scotch Ale?

I'm planning to brew a strong Scotch ale next weekend. Usually, I use an appropriate liquid yeast for my brews. However, given the high OG for this style, it would be much easier to use a couple packages of Safale than make a humongous starter. AHBS offers Safale S-33 as an option with their...

    Pre-boil efficiency higher than post-boil???

There were quite a bit of hops in this recipe, so a fair amount of hop sludge. Also there was some spillage as I transferred the wort to the fermenter. So I suppose all was normal.

    Pre-boil efficiency higher than post-boil???

I brewed an American brown ale this weekend. When I measured the SG pre-boil, I got 1.057 on 7.25 gallons, implying an efficiency of about 67% (disappointing). After the boil, I got an SG reading of 1.068 on 5.7 gallons, implying an efficiency of 62%. For the pre-boil reading, I cooled the...

    Carboy as Primary Fermenter

Does anyone else use Fermcap-S? Since I started using it, I've had absolutely no problems with blow off. I started using it after having a brew blow the lid off a 6.5 gallon plastic fermenter. Does Fermcap have any drawbacks?

    Adding yeast at bottling time.

When is it necessary to add yeast at bottling time? I have a dubbel that I will bottle after 2 weeks in primary and 3 weeks in secondary. Should I add extra yeast and, if so, how much? My last brew was a Saison which I bottled after about a combined 4 weeks of primary and secondary and it seems...

If real Trappists use primary for 5-7 days, why should I use 3 weeks

It's now been 8 days for my Westmalle Dubbel clone. OG was 1.072 and SG is now 1.016, so it's been about 76% apparent attenuation. I used White Labs WLP500 and made a 1.75 quart starter. I pitched at about 75 degrees. 4 1/2 hours later was the first time I checked the beer and it was already...

If real Trappists use primary for 5-7 days, why should I use 3 weeks

I've been reading Stan Hieronymous' "Brew Like a Monk". I was surprised to see that all of the abbeys leave all their beers in primary for only 5-7 days. There's a lot of variation in secondary, 2 days - 6 months depending on filtering, etc. etc., but the primary period is remarkably consistent...

    Hydrometer and Refractometer Disagree

I tested before pitching. I used both Beersmith and the Morebeer spreadsheet to calculate FG (I know Morebeer uses the formula Loup posted), and in any case, the OG's differed more than the FG's. The refractometer has ATC.

    Hydrometer and Refractometer Disagree

I'm at a loss. I have a hydrometer and a refractometer. I calibrated both using distilled water and both read 0 (1.000 and 0 Brix respectively), so I have to assume they are working correctly. When I measured OG of my last brew, the hydrometer read 1.071 (1.072 after temp. correction) while the...

Question? (What kind of water does everyone use?)

Campden tablets should solve that problem. BYO had an article about it. See http://***********/mrwizard/1211.html

Question? (What kind of water does everyone use?)

Tap water with 1/4 crushed Campden tablet per 5 gallon. It only needs to sit a few minutes and the chlorine/chloramine is taken care of.

Charity beer auction -- Is it legal?

So much for charity. I expected as much, but I didn't want to reply to my neighbor until I was certain. Thanks.

Charity beer auction -- Is it legal?

One of my neighbors asked me to donate some homebrews to the neighborhood's silent auction. The proceeds go to charity and I would not receive a dime. Can I do this legally. By the way, I'm in California.
