    Chlorophenol SMaSH Experiment

There is chart here: http://www.mikromarkt.eu/pdfs/uk_modul_9_t4.pdf with 15 the thershold for 95% confidence is 9, so the hypothesis failed at the 95% confidence level...

    Reusing yeast confidence

I have been reading a lot and I tend to agree that washing is unneeded and that the beer you made is the best storage medium. I have been playing around with my methods, but I think what I may latch onto is intentionally leave a little bit more beer than I usually do (I usually tip it and...

    Chlorophenol SMaSH Experiment

Agree on the triangle tests...I remember in high school a project where each group had to come up with a sensory test. One group said they were going to try to investigate the effect of vision on taste, so they blindfolded us and had us drink different pop and guess what each was. They dyed...

    Reusing yeast confidence

Maybe what I'm looking for is how do you know when to stop reusing yeast, it sounds like by generation count? I don't want to keep reusing it until I get a bad beer batch... The starter suggestion was a good one. Anyone has a story where re-use didn't work out, or maybe as long as the...

    Reusing yeast - without washing

Its hard to switch habits...I was a bleach and water guy on my first batch, because I didn't have Stars San. Then, when I had good beer I didn't want to change...keep brewing using the same sanitization ritual. Finally, I just figured I would try it....and was very nervous. Sanitized stuff...

    Reusing yeast confidence

I get the sanitation and all, just not sure how many generations. I just used WLP001 for 3 generations and WLP005 for 3 as well. I don't think I'm going to try for a 4th, each time I'm more worried... My fear is less about infection than mutated/wild yeast, how can I tell? I figure I can...

    Reusing yeast confidence

I have been homebrewing for awhile and recently starting reusing yeasts. It has gone well and I like saving the $$, but with each reuse I become more and more paranoid. The idea of losing a batch of beer.... I'm thinking about abandoning my yeast reuse, looking for things I could check to...

    Chest freezer fermenter smell

So I have always used basement or closest to ferment in and fermentation smelled great! I recently converted a chest freezer into a fermentation chamber and now it smells great for the first 3-5 days, but around the time I pull it out it is not so good. Maybe the concentration of CO2 is too...

Mash in: Grain First - Clearer wort?

Brewed adding grain first, no difference...going back to adding grain to water...

Mash in: Grain First - Clearer wort?

At this point not sure I care, I just want to determine if it is having an effect on the clarity. I agree it shouldn't matter if it is stirred up good; however, with my copper manifold, I would bet that the initial grain I dumped in at the very bottom wasn't stirred up, I can't really stir...

Mash in: Grain First - Clearer wort?

Eff was around 79% both ways, only difference I'm wondering about is how clear the wort is coming out of the mash tun after setting the grain bed. My thoughts are that the grain surrounds the manifold better if you add the grain first and then the water. I stirred well in both cases.

Mash in: Grain First - Clearer wort?

I just switched over to all grain from extract and on my first batch I added the grain first, then the water. When I set the grain bed it only took about a quart and the runnings were very clear, I was impressed. It seemed like a pain though, so for my next several batches I did the water...

    Chlorophenol SMaSH Experiment

Also interested in the results, the only difference will be the campden tablets? I run our water through a active carbon filter, but have been thinking about trying RO water with mineral additions...

    Crush

I didn't like batch sparging beacause I didn't save that much time. When I fly sparge I set the grain bed with maybe 3 quarts and then I match the flow rate into the boiling pot and of the sparge water to about 1 quart per minute, and then I just watch, less activity then the time I batch...

    Crush

Beer is good, so no worries there. If I increased the efficency I would use slightly less grain. Also, when I slaved away making my copper manfold and mash tun, I had visions of getting above average efficiency...

    Crush

I considered looking at the Ph, but most of the threads here go straight to the crush. Also, looking at this site I feel like my crush is larger than what is shown under the "good" setting... http://www.brewersfriend.com/2009/03/28/best-grind-setting-for-grains/

    Building mash tun

Lowes has them, hard to find sometimes...but, when I priced it out it was cheaper to just buy the whole setup from http://www.bargainfittings.com/ along with some silicon tubing...

    Crush

I just switched to all grain from extract and I'm looking at improving my efficiency. I'm getting about 79% from my mash, after reading a lot on here I think it is my grain crush. Othing things I have considered is my copper manifold and sparging techniques, but my manifold is similar to...
