    Thanks everyone for the advice. I ended up going with a freezer (http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_04616342000P?vName=Appliances), only because the only reasonably-priced standing fridge of the size I would want had fairly bad reviews.

    Yeah, the chest freezers at Sears are cheaper per cubic foot, but I'm convinced that the vertical space will be that much more useful than the horizontal space, that it'll even out in the end.

    Thanks all for the advice. I might end up going with a freestanding chamber and AC window unit anyway, but it sounds like this is not a universal problem, and that I would also be safe trying another freezer.

    hat is a sweet design. What is the ambient temperature in the room? Does anyone know how much of a temperature differential a smallish window unit can support? It can be upwards of 95F in my garage in the summer -- would I be able to maintain ale fermenting temperatures in a similar setup?
