Been A while since I have been here and have a Question?

Measured the Gravity today and it read 1.017 after correcting for temp. I also mesured the PH with strips that measue no lower than 4.5 I am guessing I dont have the right test strips as there was no change in color. (On a side note, I have a ph testing kit for my fresh water aquarium...

Been A while since I have been here and have a Question?

Smelled good and did a taste test. Both are cloudy, one more so. Both have the alcohol bite. Neither had any real flavor that I would describe as good or interesting. I have thought about re-racking and maybe try some clearing agent, but not sure. Not sure if the cloudiness may...

    Leap Year Mead 2

My have been sitting on this last racking since Janurary. It still has very little vanilla smell. The taste is as BigKahuna states, alcoholic and strong and hinkey. I am thinking of getting more beans and re-rack again. Comments, suggestions, complaints are all welcomed. Don "Ho"

Any one use an air pump?

In my Mead bible (The complete Meadmaker by Ken Schrammm) he mentions using compressed air for about 5 minutes in a 5 gallon carboy. Thinking about doing this on my next try at mead.. Anyone done this, pointers, or is this just wasted effort? Thanks Don "Ho"

    Leap Year Mead 2

I had it on the first set of beans (6 beans that I scraped) for 4 months. The flaver was good and the vanilla flavor was good but a little light. I then added 4 more beans that I just split and placed into the carboy. It stayed on those beans for 6 months. Umm thinking on that maybe...

Umm.. Too much tannin. Figures. Thought I was doing it right for a change. :) The taste is just harsh and maybe like it is spoiled? But my pallet(sp) is pretty bad too!!! Well it still needs to clear up. Is there anything I can put in there that would add some flavor, or should I...

    Leap Year Mead 2

I have had them on the first set of beans since April. I am getting ready to re-rack on to fresh beans, but I have a question. On the first rack, I scraped each bean into the carboy. What if you just split the beans and spead them open then put in the carboy? I seemed to be getting more...

    Filling to the top.

    Filling to the top.

I am still confused. After I take a SG reading and a small taste during racking, I have alot of air space that I need to fill. What do I use for that? More Honey? What that sweeten it up to much? Thanks Don "Ho"
