I quit last month, its been 4 weeks and 2 days for me. I quit not for my health, but because the .gov raised the taxes again and im not going to pay 6 bucks a pack. I got over the whole mind thing after 2 or 3 weeks. I still use nicotine in the form of chewing tobacco, but I dont like it so...

    s-05 vs Notty

Yes, the safe ale is american ale yeast, nottingham is english ale yeast and will have more english type esters. Safe ale 05 will be more clean fermentation, and I would suspect would ferment a little dryer also.

    Joe's Ancient Orange Mead

I went ahead and poured off a small tasting of of this mead tonight. I got 2 raisons in the glass also! I ate the raisons first, not knowing what to expect as I have not had mead before. The raisons tasted alright, a little alcoholic. I took a smell, I could smell citris, and alcohol. I...

    Better than Apfelwein...

I made a 3068 apfelwein with slurry yeast. I let it go 8 weeks in primary and kegged it. Im drinking it now. It definatly has a different taste than the edwort style. I know im drinking it early, I should bottle some keepsakes off. But it does the trick and does not taste bad in any way...

English Porter Brown Porter (AG) (UK/US)

I just brewed recipe per post number 6. At 4 weeks, this is a great tasting beer. It actually came out of style for me, I hit 82 percent effiency by accident on it. I got a 1.058 OG on the recipe. The beer taste good, good lacing and head, great taste, high alcohol at 6.5 or so percent, with...

Can you make your own orange peel from fresh oranges?

I was wondering if I could make my own orange peel by zesting oranges. How do they come up with the bitter, and sweet varieties? I would assume they would be fresher if you zested your own.

Glass Carboy vs Better Bottle vs Bucket

I started with a 6.5 carboy and a 5 gallon carboy for secondary both glass. I have a ale pail with spigot, and a 5 gallon and 2 3.5 gallon hy vee icing buckets. I like the glass carboys, the 6.5 makes a good primary for beer, the 5 gallon is a little small as its 5 gallon to the top. The 6.5...

    Joe's Ancient Orange Mead

I made the recipe exactly as posted as my first mead. I let it go a little above the shoulder of a 4l jug. I topped up the water after a week to halfway up the neck, man did this thing take off. I got orange pithy foam going through my sbubble airlock. I have it in a 2 gallon stock pot...

    Counterflow Chiller Tutorial

I had to drill mine out too. I did a lot of testing with water, to see if this will work with gravity. And if my homade hop strainer manifold works, it will! I will let you know, tomarow night im brewing a stout. Update, the manifold I made worked great with the chiller. I drilled 30 1/8...

    Counterflow Chiller Tutorial

I made this manifold. Click around other photos to see the bottom with the holes. http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/oo329/Nikolausxx/img025.jpg With the chiller and gravity feed it will drain the kettle to the little ring at bottom. I hope this works, have only done test runs with water. I...

    Counterflow Chiller Tutorial

We rolled out 2 25 foot lengths and put in hose. Then catch the end in corney keg handle. Roll keg across floor and coil that way, 1 man operation! I will post pictures when I get my expensive camera back from shop, this sucks.

    Contests and bottle conditioning.

I use irish moss right now in boil last 15, I primary for 2 weeks or more, then secondary for 5 days too a week, usually add a little gelatin. Im not complaining about my beer, just hesitant to put into a contest. I bottle condition for 3 weeks usually at room temp. Beer is usually 6-8 weeks...

    Contests and bottle conditioning.

Not to confuse the thread, same brewing process, is there advantage to entering a bottle filled from a keg, as compared to bottle conditioned. Its still beer from a keg, there is still malt hops and yeast.

    Contests and bottle conditioning.

Looks like I hit a sore spot revvy. I wasnt promoting filtering, and im glad to hear there are many bottle conditioned entries. I just know with my homebrew (and yes I know how to pour) sometimes I get a bad pour and it ruins the look of the beer. I dont think im uber beer brewer and win all...

    Better than Apfelwein...

I got 3 questins. 1. I made my first monty apfelwein in a ale pale. Local hbs guy told me it would be bad due to bucket after several weeks. Is this true? 2. Made second apfelwein a 3068 yeast in glass carboy. I bought the yeast energizer and yeast nutrient today. I added 2 teaspoons...

    Contests and bottle conditioning.

I am interested in placing my beers into local competition someday. I am thinking I want to wait until I keg. Do they dock for bottle conditioned beer with a sediment layer in bottom? I don't see how a bottle conditioned beer could stand up in points to a filtered, or kegged and clear poured...
