    lager attenuation

I have attempted a lager batch using san fran lager yeast, a high-temp and tolerant yeast. I used the wet t-shirt method to keep it cool (55 deg or so) during fermenting, and then put it in a 2ndary in the kegerator for a month at 45 deg or so. Final gravity is higher, like 1.018, than any...

    first brew w propagated yeast

I brewed a batch of 'mystery beer' - meaning I used the random hops left over in the freezer from the last several brew sessions. the main ingredients were light liquid and dry malt extract, with some steeping grains beforehand. I used propagated yeast, white labs san fran lager yeast. I...

funny: home brew shop in SLC with 'missionary discount'

Didn't seem like this would belong in the 'chit-chat' forum because it is at least somewhat brewing related. A home brew shop in salt lake city, Utah, has a discount program for missionaries. In this context missionaries are mormons, usually but not always aged 18-20 (there are older folks...

Is there a DIY alternative to a tap cleaning pump kit?

I'm looking at this and thinking I could do that myself for less maybe. http://www.northernbrewer.com/pics/fullsize/faucet-clean.jpg

keg dregs - drink or dump?

I have almost finished a keg of pale ale which was terrific. I'm probably near the bottom because the keg is very light, and the last pint I just poured has hop particels etc. it in and is much cloudier than previous pores. It tastes okay but I'm wondering if I should drink or dump the dregs?

    earth hour?

Will you be observing earth hour from 8-9pm? I may observe it by dialling down the temperature on my kegerator a couple degrees. I think it would be irresponsible to let idled electrical generating capacity go to waste.

    anyone tried these quick disconnects?

They look handy http://morebeer.com/view_product/7642/ I'm thinking of something like this for ease of assembly/disassembly, ease of clean-up, etc. as well as being able to make things point the direction I want (which can be hard with pipe threads sometimes. you don't want to under or...

    combo sight-glass/thermo, or T- fitting

I have a polar ware with two welded fittings, one 1/2" MPT for the spiggot, one 1/2" FPT for the thermo. I would like to have a sight glass. I am not going to drill a third hole in this thing. This is not a scrapyard keg, this is a nice kettle I shelled out $$ for and I am not going to mess...

    kolsch

I just kegged a batch of kolsch (brewed from extract) and of course had to take a taste and it is GOOD! I'm looking forward to it being done. This seems like easy drinking beer. Makes me want to visit Koehn.

tips and tricks to save time

I figured out a couple by myself today when doing an AG batch for the first time: 1) glass thermometers suck. 2) start heating your sparge water while mashing is in progress, so it's ready to go as soon as mashing is done. I have a 65,000 BTU (i think) burner called 'little kahuna' and it...

crap! broke thermometer in mash tun!

The bulb didn't break, just the outer glass with the lead shot. I spooned out as much of the crud as I could see. I'm considering throwing this batch into the compost bin and starting again. I'll get a digital thermo too.

    harbor freight 'plastic welder'

Has anyone tried that harbor freight 'plastic welder' which is some sort of hot air gun, and can weld some types of thermoplastics? Would this work to weld a plastic fitting into a rubbermaid? I'm interested because WELDLESS FITTINGS SUCK! You can't tighten them enough to get a good seal...

forgot to refrigerate yeast for 6 hrs

I bought yeast in the plastic tube today (white labs). I forgot to refrigerate it for 6 hrs after getting it home. Did I foul it up? Should I proof it before pitching it, or make a starter?

anyne used these lowe's 5 gal coolers

Seems like a good buy at $22 http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=212747-1217-FG1785L42 any reason not to go for this? What are the pros and cons of 5 vs 10 gal coolers if I am just brewing 5 gal batches?

    minimal AG setup

I'm confused. HLT = hot liquer tank MLT = mash lauter tun sometimes I see stainless HLT, made from an old keg. You heat up your water for mashing/sparging whatever. Makes sense. Then I also see websites with rubbermaid coolers as HLT. wtf? To confuse things even further some brew...

$1k windfall what should I blow it on?

I've got a $1k windfall (bonus at work) and saving it is out of the question given inflation and the general economic situation, I think it makes more sense to spend it now. I was thinking of a fermenator. Or perhaps an all grain set-up.

lowe's holiday brand chest freezer cornversion

I'm converting a $168 lowe's chest freezer to kegerator usage. I have made the decision that I want the CO2 tank on the outside, for easy access to the shutoff valve on the regulator nipple. If I am not dispensing or force carbing I want to be able to shut off the flow of gas. At least...

    plastic shank

I saw that micromatic sells lexan wine/cider shanks. That got me to thinking about making my own on the lathe. Any reason not to (other than time)? Would other materials such as delrin be suitable? I don't own any shanks yet. Can someone give me the specs (thread pitch, shank diameter, hole...
