    hydrometer trouble

so i brought my hydrometer back to my LHBS and it turns out they sold me the wrong one. i had a liquor hydrometer (which measures liquids with significantly lower SG than beer). i got a new one and it works well. FG came out to 1.014, a bit higher than the kit's specified 1.010-1.012, but...

What is the Late Extract Method?

how do steeped grains affect OG and hop utilization? i'm using the strangebrew software, which seems to handles steeped grains as if they're being dissolved in the boil. correct me wrong, but wouldn't they have no affect on the OG of the boil upon removal?

    Uh oh... Spots in Secondary??

So I hope this isn't a bad sign... my first batch is in secondary, and I noticed some gray circular spots on the surface of the beer. They're definitely not growing or fuzzy or anything so I'm not too worried, but I thought it would be best to ask anyway.

    My first recipe!

so after some more time messing with things, i thought it would be fun to (try to) keep the color of a true witbier while boosting the OG and ABV to bock levels. i tweaked a few other things too. 3.3# Bavarian Wheat LME (65% wheat malt, 35% base malt) 2# Pilsen Light DME 6# Wheat Malt 1...

    Steeped Grains

that's my question... i've seen oats listed as an ingredient in extract recipies. i don't know how that's possible if they need to be mashed.

    Steeped Grains

    Steeped Grains

I'm in the middle of developing a Witbier recipe, and I want to add some Oats. I haven't tried AG yet, and just want to stick with Extract and Steeped Grains for now. Anyway, I'm using StrangeBrew software, and it's telling me not to use Oats without dealing with mashing. Does that mean that I...

    My first recipe!

    First batch in secondary

my hydrometer is another problem in itself. i have no idea what i'm doing wrong... i have a true brew hydrometer that came in a plastic cylinder. i fill the cylinder with beer, put the hydrometer in it, and it floats so high that the entire scale is above the top of the liquid, leaving me...

    First batch in secondary

I just moved my first batch (True Brew Pale Ale) to secondary. The instructions on the kit say that fermentation should be done after 72 hours, and that it should be ready to bottle within a week. I noticed that the airlock stopped bubbling after 24 hours, but I waited another day just to be...

    hydrometer trouble

i was filling the tube to about 2/3. david_42's probably right... i didn't stir it very much. will that ruin the final product? one more question... fermentation began at about 10:00pm last night. when is it okay to open the lid to take a peek and take a hydrometer reading?

    hydrometer trouble

Maybe I'm just stupid, but when I tried to take my OG reading, the hydrometer floated so that the wort was below the bottom of the scale, leaving me with no reading. I spooned some wort into the tube that the hydrometer came in, dropped the hydrometer into the wort, spun it around, and...

    1/2 batch questions

thanks, i really appreciate the help. flyguy, i was planning to do 1/2 batch because, as flyguy said, i don't currently own a pot large enough for the full batch. if i used 100% of the yeast and 50% of everything else, would anything else be affected besides the fermentation time...

    1/2 batch questions

Hey everyone. I'm about to start brewing my first batch. I was thinking about doing only 1/2 batch the first time for a few reasons, and I have a few related questions. 1. Is it safe to assume that I should just use 1/2 quantity of everything? (hops, extract, yeast, water0 2. Should I...
