Anyone Else Enjoy The Occasional Brew Hiccup?

I was mashing in 10lbs of Vienna and 5lbs of Rye that I sent through the local homebrewshop's mill twice because I wanted to see if I could bump my efficiency up a little. No rice hulls, stuck sparge pretty much immediately no matter how slow I release, how many times I re-stir, blow air back up...

Just Using The Inside of Fresh Hops for Dry Hopping

I have some home grown cascade hops ready to be picked and I have a beer ready to be dry hopped. I will only be dry hopping about 2 gallons of beer and I have a TON of cascade hops on the bine right now. I was thinking about making a few slices and dices on the hops and throwing the middles into...

Help With First SMaSH Attempt - Maris Otter and Tettnang

So I just harvested Tettnang off my first year bine, about 5.3 oz dried. I want to brew a SMaSH to get a feel for the bittering and flavor/aroma of the hops being I don't have any #s on them. I am attempting a 3 gallon batch first. Any advice as to figuring out how much hops should go in...

Using a boil kettle valve without a pump

I just got a new kettle with a valve on it, brewed my first batch in it, but after I cooled the wort with an immersion chiller, I didn't want to use the valve because I felt it wasn't completely sanitized (because I didn't run any boiling wort through it) and I didn't want to run the cooled wort...

    Continuous Yeast Starter

All - I recently harvested some Conan yeast, stepped it up 4 times before pitching most of it into a clone attempt, then I estimated I was left with about 80 billion cells so I started stepping it up again until I reached ~443 billions cells for another big DIPA. I pitched that second starter...

Do You Have Experience With Cascade And Tettnang Dry Hopping?

All- I will have a nice batch of cascade and tettnang hops I am growing this year and want to dry hop an IPA with freshly picked hops. Anyone have experience dry hopping with cascade and tettnang together that can help me figure out a good ratio between the two? I know tettnang isn't usually dry...

Will too much Fermcap hurt yeast?

Went to put some fermcap in my starter and it was slightly stuck then squirted out quickly and I probably added about 15-20 drops easily (in one large/quick squirt). Any ideas if this will hurt yeast in any way or just REALLY keep that foam down?

Are there any hard to get beers in North Carolina?

I want to start trading for some beers that I don't have access to like the typical 3 floyds, pliny, hills farmstead, etc etc... but what is in NC that is hard to find elsewhere? Thanks for any suggestions :)

Need Help On Creating A Yeast Starter From 4-5 Billion Yeast Cells

I am acquiring 4-5 billion cells of a wild yeast and I obviously need to make a starter and step it up a few times. Question is...do I need to keep a certain ratio of yeast cells to starter wort? Do I just want to throw the 4-5 billion yeast cells in a 1 liter starter then step it up another...

The BEST Mac And Cheese (Warning: Advanced Recipe)

This is taking mac and cheese to the next level. Some may think its too much but those who actually make this will never look at mac and cheese the same again. I make this way too much but it is sooooo delicious....its important to note that this takes about 1.5 hours from start to finish so...

Brotha From Anotha Motha Fermentation Chamber

Hey Ya'll, I've finally gone the next step in my homebrewing and built a fermentation chamber to control my fermentation temps. This is a big step and will improve my beers dramatically. Before I was using the swamp cooler method which worked ok but it was never really too controllable and...

Anyone Else Have A SWMBO Who Loves Really Hoppy IPAs?

I am required to always have at least 1 really dank/hoppy IPA on tap at all times. That's what keeps the SWMBO happy and me brewing more :)

Has Anyone Started A Small Hop Farm And Actually Started Selling To Breweries?

I follow the hop growing forum pretty regularly but I don't see a lot of info on whether or not people are becoming successful enough to start selling production to local breweries/hbs. I am interested to hear about any/all of the questions below. Questions are: 1) How many rhizomes did...

Fermentation Temperature When Fermenting More Than 1 Beer At A Time

Hey All- I will soon have a Mother of Fermentation Chamber built and I am curious about fermenting more than 1 beer in it at a time. Say I have 1 batch fermenting in there, then next week I brew another batch and put it in there, do I switch the temperature probe to the new batch? If so, that...

    Strike Water Matrix

Hey All- I was searching around for a nice visual on strike water temperatures and couldn't find one so I decided to make a matrix. This just gives me the option to print it out and pin it up for a quick reference instead of having to run to a computer or do calculations in my head. I...
