what's it like with crystal? i've quite honestly never been the hugest crystal fan and i felt the german hops in this recipe were part of its charm.

Why did you get into this hobby?

I was having a few crappy, commercial beers with my brother-in-law one Sunday afternoon. I never really drank much beer because I considered beer to be tasteless and generally, quite bad. We somehow got into talking about why we were drinking this piss and why all beer tasted the same. My...

Just starting and could use some help

It's too early to toss it now; keep it and drink it when it's ready. If it tastes crap after that, then pm me and I'll give you my address. Send them my way; I'll drink them! :-) Welcome to the world of homebrewing. You're gonna have a whole lot of fun!

American Pale Ale Bee Cave Brewery Haus Pale Ale

Turned out very nice, I must admit. Had quite a few bottles already. Three of my favorite hops I usually use in IPA's.

American Pale Ale Bee Cave Brewery Haus Pale Ale

So I eventually managed to get all the ingredients together and brewed this this past Wednesday. Everything went perfect; probably one of my most stress free and best brews to date. The OG was somewaht higher than the recipe, 1.062. On Thursday morning I checked on it but no bubbling from...

    1st Batch Brewed: Fermentation?

No point in adding more yeast. Measure the gravity; that will give you a good idea as to how fermentation's progressing. It's more than likely probable that the majority of the fermentables have fermented out already. Just put the beer in a cool, dark place and leave it there for 10 - 14 days...

American Pale Ale Bee Cave Brewery Haus Pale Ale

I used about 8.5 lbs 2 row pale malt, 2.5 lbs carapils and 1 lbs caramunich. Cascade and Williamette @ 60 mins and Chinook @ 0 mins. So far, it seems to have turned out brilliantly although I've not really had much yet; just bottled it yesterday.

Any way to speed up the brew day?

If I can't take my time on a brew day, I don't brew. There's nothing worse, imo, than rushing a brew. I usually get up quite early and make myself a good breakfast to get the energy levels up. I then go through to my brew area (garage), fire up my computer and put on some music. From there I put...

American Pale Ale Bee Cave Brewery Haus Pale Ale

^ I was light-heartedly recalling how I started out trying to brew this recipe but due to an odd turn of events out of my control, I ended up brewing something completely different. Such is the beauty of brewing; no matter what, good beer is good beer.

American Pale Ale Bee Cave Brewery Haus Pale Ale

After almost reading through this entire thread, I decided I would brew this. Went to the supply store and they never had vienna or crystal. I got carapils and caramunich instead. Then they didn't have any cascade either so I used williamette and chinook I had left over from a previous batch. In...

Any way to speed up the brew day?

I love brewing. I don't want to make my time shorter. If anything, I'd like to prolong the time I have brewing. Brewing time is the only time I in my life that I feel like I'm accomplishing something.

American Pale Ale Bee Cave Brewery Haus Pale Ale

I happened to have some extra malt and hops lying about so I decided to give this beer a try. Followed the recipe almost to a T except I didn't have any Vienna so I used Cara Pils instead. I'm a little disappointed that I only got an OG of 1.042 instead of 1.052 but it'll still be beer at the...
