AHA Demographics - 2/3rds have been brewing since 2005?

So after their recent survey, among other stats, the AHA says that of those surveyed, two-thirds of them started brewing after 2005. That seems like a lot...why do you think this is...

    Hurricane Ale?

In NJ, watching the rain get stronger as Sandy approaches, and thinking: can I brew with that water? Has anyone done this before, brewing with collected storm rain? Is it possible, assuming I can collect enough?

    Northern Brewer is awesome LOL

My wife ordered me a few things for my birthday from NB and made a special request (highlighted in yellow in pic) and this is what they responded with. I'm not sure what the heck they were going for, but it made me laugh and that's what counts...

viability of lager yeast from September?

I just realized that the Wyeast 2206 I was planning to use tomorrow for a Marzen has a MFG date of 9/22/09. MrMalty.com's yeast calculator says this packet is only 10% viable, so I'll need something like 10 packs of yeast(!). This is my first lager, and I'm aware that they require more yeast...

mounting a blower motor to power my mill?

I have a 1/2 HP (5kcp39mg) GE blower motor that I'd like to use for my mill. It has no threaded mounting holes as far as I can tell, and no base - probably because that's not what this motor was made for. It does have what a google search says are "resilient rings for base mounting"...

be careful when ordering yeast culturing eq. from cynmar

You will be charged extra shipping if you order agar plates, and their site has no inventory control to show if an item is in or out of stock. I placed an order from cynmar.com recently for agar plates and a few other things. It took them an extra week to ship, because they were out of an...

Is culturing lager yeast from a bottle harder than ale yeast?

On my recent trip to Switzerland, I was able to bring back two bottles of unfiltered beer, Appenzeller Holzfass Bier and Eichhof Klosterbrau. They're both lagers, all I could find in the limited time that I had. I'm hoping to culture and bank the yeast from them. I've successfully cultured...

Anybody speak German? Translate this "Ode to Beer"

On vacation in Lucerne, Switzerland last week, I had dinner at the Rathaus Brauerei a few times. I took some photos of the brewing equipment and saw a framed poem on the wall that was too far to read. I blew up the photo of it and was able to get most of the words. Anybody here wanna take a stab...

Mutant cone on my cascade bine?

I got a little crazy while pruning my cascade bine today and wound up cutting a portion that had cones on it. As I was cutting the cones off, I came across one cone that looks like it couldn't decide whether to be a leaf or a cone - it grew all weird with multiple leaves coming out of the middle...

Glacier hops and European Ale yeast WLP011?

I have 3 oz extra Glacier hops and a vial of WLP011 due to a mistake in an order I placed a few months ago. I'm hoping I can use them both in the same recipe. Unfortunately I'm having trouble finding recipes that use either one, and I'm not quite at the point where I feel comfortable just...

WLP011 or WLP029 for more Honey character?

I want to make a Honey Kolsch, and get a good honey character. As I understand it, this would be primarily in the nose, as the sweetness will be fermented out completely. Can anyone speculate which strain would be better for this? I'm guessing WLP011 since it seems the attenuation is lower...

    12g cartridges in 16g charger?

Planning to bring a keg to a 4th of July party, so I just ordered the portable charger from Morebeer. Does anyone have one of these? Does it work with 12g cartridges, or should I keep looking for 16g? Morebeer didn't have the co2 cartridges in stock, and so I'm going to have to find them...

NB Honey Weizen - is 3 weeks enough?

I got ambitious and announced that I would brew a beer for the bosses' July 4th BBQ. Problem is, I didn't check the calendar first. I gave myself a total of 3 weeks to have this beer from kettle to glass. I brewed the NB Honey Weizen extract kit last Friday (6/12) and it got from 1.048 ->...

    Clear plasti-dip on glass carboys?

I was thinking back to when I worked in a lab and some of the jars were covered with a transparent, thick rubber skin to keep it semi-intact if it broke. With a large enough amount of clear plasti-dip, and the time to paint it on in layers to build up the right thickness, does anybody think...

Help me to understand chloride - sulfate ratio

In several podcasts on water chemistry, Palmer mentions that the pH isn't as important as the chloride to sulfate ratio. He has said that this is because the acidity of the grains will buffer most of the alkalinity of the water. He goes on to say that the chloride to sulfate ratio has more to...

    Papazian's Kings&Vagabonds czech-style lager recipe?

So I noticed Charlie references this beer a lot, but I can't find it in any of his books. I asked The Godfather in an email and he told me to check the January - February 2007 issue of Zymurgy magazine, which I don't have. Anybody have this issue or the recipe?
