    Sam Adams Hoppy Red

Here are a couple pictures of our Red IPA - turned out very well, but I wouldn't brew it exactly the same again. This was our first beer using Nelson and I think I'd scale it back just a bit. The beer has a bit more "funk" to it than I typically prefer, so I might up the proportion of mosaic &...

    Sam Adams Hoppy Red

We haven't brewed it yet. Decided to go with an existing red IPA recipe from the Mad Fermenationist / Modern Times. Here is a good link. Primary fermentation is done and I plan to transfer to the serving keg this week. If I get back to trying the Sam Adams Hoppy Red clone then I'll come...

    Sam Adams Hoppy Red

Thanks for your input! It certainly didn't seem anywhere near SRM 26 to me, so it has to be a different scale. I'm not too worried about the color anyway, primarily want to get the right malt and hop flavor. I tend to be cautious with caramel malts (especially the darker varieties), which is...

    Sam Adams Hoppy Red

I'm looking to brew something similar to the Sam Adams Hoppy Red that is in their fall sampler pack now. Would love to get any feedback from those who have tried it! I found the body to be medium / full with a great resinous / sticky hop flavor. I'd describe the color as light red / amber...

    New BIAB False Bottoms

We've brewed a couple more times since my last post. Slowing the recirculation speed down significantly seems to have made the difference. Our false bottom is a little bent out of shape from the vacuum suction we put it through the first couple uses, but still works great.

    New BIAB False Bottoms

I forgot to mention that our temp probe is part of the recirculation, not in the kettle. So the wort goes through the pump, some more tubing, then into a T fitting with a probe before going back in the kettle. I'll measure how much volume per minute we're moving on the next brew.

    New BIAB False Bottoms

We bought the 17.5" version for our 20 gallon Spike kettle and have used it 3 times now. Quick history of our eBIAB system: We built it about 1.5 years ago and have about 25 batches on it. Most 10 gallons with a few 5 gallons. It is a recirculating mash setup with a 5500 watt element using...

Dark Mild Jonas's Mild Flurries (Oat Dark Mild)

I gave it a go with less than perfect results, although I think the beer will still turn out great. Here is my thread describing how it went.

Making British invert syrup at home

I attempted to make invert #3 for the first time last week. I followed the guidelines from this thread and from Ron Pattinson's historical recipe book. I started with 2 lbs of Rapadura raw sugar, 4 cups of water and 1/2 tsp cream of tartar. I brought the water to a boil, turned off the...

Dark Mild Jonas's Mild Flurries (Oat Dark Mild)

Qhrumphf - I have a couple questions about making invert #3. I am planning a mild brew next week and would like to try this out. Thank you for a very detailed recipe post! 1) Your directions say to stir frequently when heating to 130F, but don't mention stirring again after that. Do you stop...

    New BIAB False Bottoms

Bought the 17.5" for my 20 gallon Spike v3 kettle - really looking forward to using it once it arrives. For those of you who have already brewed with one of these, do you remove it after the mash and before the boil? Or do you just leave it in place during the boil?

    New BIAB False Bottoms

Do you have an update? Would love to order one before my next brew!

    New BIAB False Bottoms

I have been looking for something like this for a long time - very exciting! I have the Spike Brewing 20 gallon kettle, which has a 17.7" diameter. The 14.75" false bottom would then leave a 1.5" gap around the edge - too much? Perhaps, but I might give it a shot regardless.

Nitro / Beer gas tank & regulator questions

Thanks for the reply. I forgot to add that my tank is at room temp (65) - it is outside my freezer. There are 2 places that will fill my 38 cu ft tank, $50 or $65. I'm not sure how that size compares to your 5-gallon tank though.

Nitro / Beer gas tank & regulator questions

I bought a nitro / beer gas mix setup about 6 months ago. It is a 38 cu ft tank and I was able to serve 1 full 5-gallon keg and 2 partial 5-gal kegs before it was empty, so about 10 gallons. I'm having trouble finding info about how many kegs I can expect to serve with beer gas, but 2 didn't...

Brew It! - Yooper's Oatmeal Stout

I'm curious why Yooper likes to mash stouts at 5.5-5.6 - is there a specific reason for this?

BrewNanny - What do you think?

Glad you got your money back! Which credit card company was it? I submitted my dispute a couple weeks ago, so I'm still waiting to hear.

    30 min mash Success!

This thread is very interesting to me. I've been brewing BIAB style for a couple years now, and usually have under attenuated beers. I've actually extended our mash times beyond 60 minutes and get better attenuation when doing so. Lots of factors at play of course that affect attenuation...

    Bar Build Completed

kvgros - very nice! I am just starting to put together something very similar have a couple questions if you don't mind. What is the wrap that you have lining the interior of your collar? Some kind of moisture barrier? It looks like you probably have some rigid foam board between the wrap and...
