    Hmmm. What happened here?

I brewed an English Ale with a friend about 10 days ago. We racked to secondary last night and the beer has a mildly sour aroma and taste. Recipe: 3 lbs Muntons Amber LME 1 lb Muntons Amber DME 1 lb Crystal Malt 40L .5 oz Styrian Goldings (60) .5 oz Styrian Goldings (15) .5 oz Willamette...

    diacetyl hell

My Stella clone has come out with all sorts of diacetyl issues. A definite smell and a bit of taste. DAMN!! I am wondering if a bit of lemon in the glass might counter this and make it a bit more palatable. Has anyone tried this?

A joyous find at the farmers market

So, yesterday, I picked up my lovely wife and we went to the Wednesday Farmers Market in Portland. Bought a bunch of Basil plants, I love pesto, and some flowers. The last vendor we stopped at was Kennebec Flower Farm. They always have great quality plants and the real 'odd balls'. I was looking...

    Anyone in Maine want Willamette

Hi All I need to divide my Willamette hops. BAD!! I have about three times more than I have space for! Anyone in central or southern Maine looking for very healthy fresh divisions at a good price?

    Calculating Efficiency

Hi All Although I have been brewing for some time, I still have not grasped the efficiency calculation thing. SWMBO tells me I am slow to pick things up and I think she is right. Anyhow, I racked a extract version of my High Head Honey Blonde last night and am now trying to crack this thing...

Another reason to like Boston Beer

I was reading the article linked below in today's Boston Globe. Seems Boston Beer, AKA Sam Adams, is selling some of they're hops to small craft brewers to help them keep going during the shortage. Not only that, they are selling at cost. Some good guys there...

    'Newbie' question

Hi All I have been brewing for about 12 years or so but am now just contemplating moving into wines. Can anyone suggest good references for a beginner? I am looking to make Old Vine Zin (SWMBO's fav), Pinot Noir and Chianti (my fav). Any suggestions are welcomed. :)

    Delerium Tremens

I had the pleasure of trying this Belgian creation a week or so ago. Nice golden color. Decent hops notes. Smooth finish. Very nice. I was half way through a pint when I looked at the back of the bottle. 8.2%! Yowza! Never would have guessed by the color or flavour. Good thing SWMBO was...

    Dark Amber Pilsner. WTF?

Hi All So, two weeks ago I brewed an extract Pilsner. The base was a Coopers kit to which i added 3 lbs of Munton's lite DME. Brought to a boil and did two hops additions at 15 and 5 minutes. Fermented around 63 or so. Last Sunday I racked to my carboy. The color at racking was golden and...

    Dry Hopping, what went wrong

Hi All I recently made my first attempt at dry hopping. I made a low alcohol IPA, I like them because I can drink more, and dry hopped it in secondary for two weeks. I used about 4 ounces of my own Willamette Hops. I hung it from a string through the airlock hole and moved it up and down every...

To Rack or Not to Rack

That is the question. I have a Vienna Lager in primary for seven days. I am wondering if I should rack it to another fermenter to lager it. I know that leaving it on the trub can cause off flavors. Wada ya think?

    Any barley growers out there

Hi All I am a homebrewer and gardener who hates mowing the lawn. Therefore, I am replacing lawn with garden. I currently grow Willamette hops and am going to expand into a couple more varieties this year. I have been doing some reading on growing barley for malt. Seems it is suppoed to be...

    Hello fellow brewers

I am glad to be here. I have been searching for an online community for a while. Some of the homebrewing groups out there can get kind of nasty. I am sincerely hoping this is not one. I am an intermediate brewer living on the beach outside of Portland Maine. I like to brew unique ales and...
