LHBS doesn't carry drilled stopper for 2L erlenmeyer

And I need to make a starter for a brew this weekend. Suggestions? Should I just use aluminum foil over the top? Seems a bit iffy to me.

Anyone have Bayou Classic's email address?

I ordered the SQ-14 from Home Depot and it was shipped with parts missing. My schedule doesn't allow me to call during business hours and their answering service doesn't seem to work correctly in order to leave a message. Home Depot has been no help and I'd like to contact them directly. They...

    Man, I love Apfelwein

I started a 6 gallon batch about 6.5 weeks ago using table sugar rather than corn sugar. My OG was 1.062. I still have a pretty decent array of bubbles creeping up the glass. I took a sample today and read a gravity of 1.003. It tastes slightly yeasty. Do I have a stuck fermentation? After...

Any reason not to pick up this stock pot?

Any reason not to pick up this stock pot?

I've been looking for a stock pot that I can use for full boil brews. I realize I have to buy the lid separately but this seemed like a pretty good deal for a starter brew pot. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001CHKL68/?tag=skimlinks_replacement-20 Since I'm pretty new to the hobby I figured I...

Didn't hit intended OG with extract kit

Ah, that would make sense. Thanks, Hex. So in other words, my first gravity reading was just incorrect? Are there any other side effects to this problem other than inaccurate gravity readings? Does the wort end up effectively mixing as the yeast does its work?

Didn't hit intended OG with extract kit

I recently tried the American IPA #1 kit from Austin Homebrew Supply. I did everything as the instructions detailed other than adding approximately 4 oz. of corn sugar just for the hell of it. According to their info sheet the OG should have been approximately 1.060. Unfortunately I only got...

Green tea and ginger wine questions.

I found this recipe that I would like to try but I had some questions before I jump in. http://winemaking.jackkeller.net/request216.asp There are a few things I plan on doing slightly differently, such as shooting for a specific OG of 1.095 rather than just adding 2 lb. of sugar, etc. I...

Rookie question about 1 gal. batches

Thanks you both for the info.

Rookie question about 1 gal. batches

How does one account for loss of must when racking to secondary? I'm wanting to try a 1 gal. batch of green tea and ginger wine from a recipe that I recently found. I plan to use a bucket as my primary and 1 gal. glass jug as secondary. I'm wondering how much water to use at the outset. I...

Some (hopefully) basic q's about my first brew.

Thank you for the advice. I understand the basic of the mash reasonably well, despite accidentally using the word "steeped". I get the idea of where the temps should be, and why, and for how long. The protein rest, proteolytic and diastatic enzymes, Alpha-amylase, Beta-amylase, etc. That being...

Some (hopefully) basic q's about my first brew.

I am in the prep stages of attempting my first home brew. While being patient and putting together all of my equipment, etc., I have been reading obsessively and watching many, many videos on the process. I feel like I have a reasonably good grip on how and why the process works the way that it...

    Checking in from St. Louis

Hello folks. I've been a craft brew appreciator for quite a few years but I'm finally just getting around to getting into home brewing. I've been reading and watching videos obsessively to learn as much as possible before I take the plunge. I'm still saving for a couple bits and pieces and...
