    Want to go All-Grain

I have a nice $100 bill burning a whole in wallet after getting into the finals of my fantasy football league. How far can I stretch it to go all-grain? My brewing set up is already pretty good. I have a nice propane burner, 10 gallon pot, chest freezer with temp controller, etc.

Can I turn a Mr. Beer Recipe Kit into something useful?

Thanks for all the advice guys. I think I will just go ahead an add to whatever my next brew will be.

Can I turn a Mr. Beer Recipe Kit into something useful?

It's a refill kit. I do the standard 5 gallon extract kits right now, so all of my equipment is geared towards that.

Can I turn a Mr. Beer Recipe Kit into something useful?

So my buddy is going through a divorce and is trying to liberate (and downsize) stuff from his condo. Long story short, he gave me a Mr. Beer Mexican Cerveza kit and I was looking for some advice to make it something more useful. Maybe kick it up to 5 gallons, bump the abv up a bit, etc.

    DIY Walk In Cooler Build

Nice. I will say that with 3 kids, homebrewing is actually a good hobby. I can brew at home and have my boys (5 and 3) in the backyard while I'm brewing. And my baby girl is old enough now to hang out outside, too (10 mos. yesterday). I can plop her in her bouncy chair and she is happy to be...

    DIY Walk In Cooler Build

Slightly OT, but there are a couple of Starbucks built out of used up shipping containers.

What's the worst craft brew (commercial) you've had?

I like the small batch stuff they do. I loved the Gingerbread Stout that was out at Christmas time.

I shake my head at my child

Heck, if you can, have them about 2 years apart. My boys are 21 months apart and it's cool to see how much closer they are than I am with my siblings. I am the oldest and my brother and I are 4 years apart. I am almost 7 years older than my little sister. When my wife and I started having...

I shake my head at my child

My almost 5 year old is generally a pretty good kid. He usually had a pretty good disposition and has never been a trouble maker (his 3 year old brother on the other hand.. not so much). I let my wife sleep in on Sunday and I was downstairs with the boys while my wife and our 3 month old...

What do you dislike about summer?

In my neck of the woods, I just dislike the heat in August and September. Other than that, summer is great. No work, traveling, etc. I get to be with my kiddos everyday and not get up at 5:30. I think my least favorite month is January. My life revolves around baseball (much to my wife's...

What's the worst craft brew (commercial) you've had?

My wife, myself, and my BIL threw a 60th birthday party for my mother in law yesterday. I picked up the Sam Adam's Summer Sampler at Sam's Club (figured it would be a decent compromise for a crowd). I tried all of the beers and not one of them seemed any good to me. Little White Rye was okay...

What's the worst craft brew (commercial) you've had?

I know it isn't necessarily craft anymore, but Red Hook's stuff all tastes the same to me.

    Favorite Brewery

I think I might love Stone better, but Hangar is a close second. They consistently turn out a wonderful product and they have something for everyone (which Stone does not). Are you local to Hangar? Have you tried Dunkey Punch or Ritual?

Funny things you've overheard about beer

When I was a kid here in Southern CA, if you wanted a Pepsi or Coke at a restaurant, you just asked for "a coke" and people pretty much knew what you were talking about.

    Favorite steak

I know steaks and roasts are different, but I made an elk roast a few months back and it came out pretty good. I used a "Cook's Country" (ie America's Test Kitchen) method that I usually use for lean beef roasts and it came out pretty good. General method - I kind of did a hybrid of a couple...

    Favorite steak

When I do a sirloin steak, I have the butcher cut it pretty thick, like at least 1.5 inches and marinate the heck out of it. If you get them pre-cut, they are just too thin and cook too fast. They are hard to cook rare and they generally are tough.

    Favorite steak

I have to say that intellectually, a t-bone or bone in rib-eye are about the best steak possible. Emotionally (as a California kid with relatives on the central coast) that a tri-tip cooked to perfection is some kind of wonderful. I don't cook mine over red oak as others have suggested on...

Question about City Ordinances (Pest Treatment)

It's probably harmless in the long run. Of course, this is coming from someone that lives in Southern CA and the air that I breathe on a daily basis is probably worse than any pesticide. First, I would ask your neighbor to give you a heads up when the bug guy comes. We have a bug guy at our...

    Water for extract brewing

I don't know where you live, but in Southern CA there are water machines outside of every grocery store. .25 a gallon isn't too bad of a price to pay. Of course, there are also water stores in almost every shopping center in my area. I actually get my water from the water stores now because I...

    Keg Fridge Electricity Consumption

My wife and I inherited a early 90's fridge when we were first married. It wasn't horrible for energy consumption, but it wasn't great either. A couple of years ago, we picked up a brand new fridge and "stole" my parent's chest freezer (they are sort of empty nester's now). Our electric bill...
