    Leaky Perlicks

I've got some Perlick 525 taps that I've been happily using for several years. A few months ago, I started having problems with them not completely closing ... resulting in wasted/spilled beer, early morning floor mopping, etc. I've replaced all the gaskets, I've taken everything apart and...

    Do carbonating lids actually work

I'm considering buying/building a carbonation lid for my kegs. Before I do though, I wanted to ask...do they actually carbonate faster or better than just putting the keg on 10-12 psi for a week? What are the pros and cons? Is it something I'll buy/build and then stop using? Any experiences...

Frozen kegs resulted in syrup sweet beers

My Johnson controller died the death last week. I found out when I came home and tried to draw a beer and got nothing - no hiss, no foam - nothing. I popped the top on my kegerator and found 4 kegs of ice inside. After some quick research on HBT to see what to do I unplugged the kegerator...

Great Facepalm Moments in Home Brewing

That moment when you think to yourself, "You know, I don't recall the last time I calibrated my thermometer." ...and you discover that a glass of ice water measures 50 degrees F. :smack:

    Steeping time

I found this recipe on the 'net from BYO Magazine from 1997 and was struck by the short steeping time. Most recipes I've seen call for steeping for 30 to 60 minutes. Does anybody have an idea as to why this only calls for 15 minutes? Interestingly, all the recipes have what seem to me...

Flat tubing for an Immersion Chiller

We've all heard that turbulent flow through an IC will improve efficiency because it breaks up the water stream preventing the center from remaining cooler than the outside. Has anyone every tried using flattened copper tubing to build an IC? I'm thinking something similar to the picture...

    Carbonic tank vs CO2 tank

The father of a guy I work with runs a fire extinguisher service and can get me a 10 Lb. tank for a good price - around $50. It'll be a used tank with a new valve assembly, hydrostatic tested (he does that as well). Thing is, he says it's a 'Carbonic' tank, not a CO2 tank. What's the...

    $26 Ball Lock Kegs - North-central PA

First off, I have no affiliation with this vendor other than having bought 4 kegs off of them. That said, I was shopping for kegs and was striking out on all the usual places locally when I happened to notice that a vendor on eBay was within driving distance. The vendor is called Austin...

Keezer lid question - replace the freezer lid

I'm in the early stages of planning a keezer build and got to wondering...is there any advantage or disadvantage to completely replacing the freezer lid with a homebuild one? I was considering building a complete frame - including the top - out of 2x2 lumber with a fairly high R-value...
