    Indiana Complete Home Brew Package

Hi Lee, Just sent you a PM about my interest. I'm down in Martinsville, so very close to you. Let me know if you have any of the gear left. Thanks, David

    Can you use ice

I used ice in my first batch with no ill effects. I sanitized some clean tupperware and filled with boiled water. It ended up being about a gallon of water worth of ice (8 lbs). Tossed it in the wort, which was also sitting in an ice bath and had it cool within 15 minutes. I wouldn't trust...

    Over-carbed...what next?

I figured as much and don't plan on drinking any more for the next week or so. I guess I was just concerned that if they are already this carbed at 9 days, are the bottles going to start blowing soon? Thanks for your reply.

    Ferocious ipa from midwest

I'm very new to this, so don't take what I say as gospel. I purchased the extract kit from Midwest and assumed you did as well. Adding the extract late (as opposed to adding all of it at the beginning of the boil, as the instructions state) will help prevent over-caramelization of the extract...

    Ferocious ipa from midwest

I just purchased this for my next batch. I've heard nothing but good things and am really looking forward to it. Most people just seem to follow the directions and it turns out great. The main adjustment I plan on making is late extract addition. Good luck!

    Over-carbed...what next?

Hi All, I posted a week or so ago about a bottling mishap that resulted in 5 oz. of priming sugar being used for around 4 gal of Irish red ale. Replys ranged from "you'll be fine" to "expect bottle bombs". Bottling was 9 days ago, and there have been no explosions to date. This evening...

Bottling Day Mishap - Cause for Concern?

I poured the wort through a fine mesh strainer and got a lot of the gunk out. The trub was far from compacted. After 22 days in primary and 5 in the fridge to cold crash, I was expecting a more solid layer. Instead, i would describe it as just "settled" which easily mixed when disturbed...

I must be spoiled by Amazon, because Midwest is slow

Update: I just got an email this morning saying that my order from Sunday mentioned in the post above has shipped. Hopefully they are back on track.

I must be spoiled by Amazon, because Midwest is slow

I've ordered 3x from Midwest, the last one placed on Sunday. The first two orders shipped relatively quickly, not Amazon quick but reasonable. I haven't heard anything about my order placed on Sunday, but it was a lot of odds and ends so I figured it might take longer to put together.

Bottling Day Mishap - Cause for Concern?

Thanks for the replys. It was in primary for 22 days plus 4 days in the fridge. I expected a more solid trub layer but maybe it was the yeast (muntons dry included in the kit). I'll be sure to consult a priming calculator the next time around. -dmboiler

Bottling Day Mishap - Cause for Concern?

Hi All, I managed to make it all the way to bottling day on my first attempt at homebrew (Midwest Irish Red Ale) before my first misstep: I lost siphon when the fermenter still had about a gallon in it (half trub/half beer). The trub layer was soft so it easily mixed with the beer when i...

Midwest Irish Red - Update (w/Pics)

Hey All, There seem to be a lot of us newbies brewing the Irish Red extract kit from Midwest at the moment, so I thought I would post the status of my brew. To begin, this is my first attempt at homebrew. I mostly followed the directions provided with the kit, but did add/modify based on...

How dumb are your state/province's liquor laws?

I don't think anyone has chimed in for the good 'ole state of Indiana yet, so here goes. Outside of maybe Utah, we probably have the most conservative laws, most of which date back to prohibition: 1.) Absolutely NO alcohol sales in stores on Sunday (wineries, brewpubs, restaurants, etc can...

First Brew Questions - Midwest Irish Red Ale

Hey All, I've been visiting the site for awhile now, and I've got to say there seem to be a lot of good people and advice here. I am prepping for my first brew - Midwest's Irish Red Ale - and wanted to get some opinions on when to add the LME. Due to the size of the stock pot I have on...
