    Fermenting a Big Beer

I won't be able to get out to the store till Saturday. Will that be too late?

    Fermenting a Big Beer

K, here's where I'm at right now. My OG was 1.122 on Wednesday. Now, four day later, my gravity is 1.071. Now, I was thinking about making a starter with the package a champagne yeast I have and pitching that once my current yeast stops. Thing is, I've heard different things about this. I've...

    Fermenting a Big Beer

Can I just let this yeast run its course and re pitch in a week or so?

    Fermenting a Big Beer

I won't be able to make it out the the store to get more yeast, so that's out of the question. I'll re-aerate though. My airlock has been pretty reliable so far.

    Fermenting a Big Beer

I have a 6.5 gallon bucket and I only got 4 gallons out of this batch. I didn't mash high(temp I'm assuming?). If anything I was a few degrees under my target. I did not make a yeast starter, I used Wyeast 1056. I also have some champagne yeast, should I throw a little of that in as well? My...

    Fermenting a Big Beer

So, how exactly is brewing and fermenting a big beer different opposed to a "small" beer? I've heard it can be harder, but how much harder? Yesterday I brewed an Imperial Rye IPA with an OG of 1.122. As of now, the airlock shows fermentation. Will it keep on going as my others have, or will it...

    Grainy Tasting?

My past few beers have been sorta grainy tasting. Almost like the unfermented wort. I think it may have had something to do with the boil. My pot doesn't quite fit on the burner and never quite gets to a full boil. Could that be the issue? I have made the switch to AG and now have a propane...

No Hydrometer and Need to Take a Reading Soon!

I broke my hydrometer the other day and don't have the time to go get a new one. My beer is almost done fermenting and I need to take a reading soon. Is there any other way to take a gravity reading? I've heard of using a scale and weighing the beer, but I don't have a scale that precise. Any...

    Shandy Thangs

So, in my drunken ramblings with my brother, we have decided to make a watermelon shandy for this summer. Couple of Q's. 1. What should be my beer to watermelon beverage ratio? 1:1? 2:1? 2. What beer is best for shandies? I was thinking a pale ale. Erxtra pale. 3. Should I use real...

    Inconsistent Temperature

So do you think I'm good? I'm dry hoping, will that maybe mask some of the off flavors?

    Inconsistent Temperature

Will an inconsistent temperature during fermentation ruin my beer? I'm doing my rye IPA now and the temperature has fluctuated between about 55 and 70 degrees. I gave it a taste after racking it to the secondary and it didn't taste TOO off, but there was something off about it I think. I'm...

How Far Off can my OG be and Still be Okay?

Just brewed my Rye IPA last night, my first original recipe, and after reviewing the numbers, my OG is a little low. The calculator said it would be 1.066 and my reading was 1.054. Any ideas on what could make it off that much? Is that even a lot to be off? This is my first time actually taking...

Is My New Recipe Any Good?

Oh, I did make some changes. Before, it did fit the IIPA mold and was at 210 IBUs according to the calculator.

Is My New Recipe Any Good?

Thanks guys. Will be making some changes. Also, do you think this beer will have some body? My coffee stout was kinda watery in the middle and I suspect it was from a lack of DME. Is this enough DME and steeping grains to give it a nice malty body? Obviously not too over the top, just not...

Is My New Recipe Any Good?

http://www.brewersfriend.com/homebrew/recipe/view/37504/live-by-the-hop-die-by-the-hop That should work. Changed it a little bit. Now just an American Rye IPA.

Is My New Recipe Any Good?

Also, is this TOO much hops? I know you can never have a beer that is too hoppy, but is this at the point where it is overkill and won't have much of a difference?

Is My New Recipe Any Good?

Been putting this together in the calculator. According to the thing, everything is within the normal ranges for an Imperial IPA, except for the IBUs at 210. Would YOU change any of the DME, hops, addition times or amounts? This is my first recipe that is my own, so I'm kind of afraid of muffing...

    Hop Additions

    Thank you

    Hop Additions

Quick question. When adding hops in the boil, do I leave them in for the entirety of the boil, or take them out at the next hop addition?
