    Help! contamination issues

Star San may not kill gram negative bacteria strains and certain wild strains of yeast and other fungus. Should kill most bacteria and probably effective for most applications but a if there is still an infection a chlorinated sanitizer will be more effective. Says on the star San bottle...

    Help! contamination issues

Use a chlorinated sanitizer, StarSan only kills certain types of bacteria like E.coli and listeria but there are a number that it doesn't kill. I would imagine other no rinse sanitizers are similar.

Why doesn’t beer come in PET plastic bottles?

When I go camping (before I started making my own) I would go searching for plastic, most provincial parks around here don't allow cans or bottles. Plus glass is heavy and glass and cans need to be hauled back out where as plastic can be burned.

Why doesn’t beer come in PET plastic bottles?

I would imagine it has to do with the cost associated with handling and recycling. Not sure about else where but here in Ontario Canada they pay 10c on the bottle for returns, allows for a steady reusable supply, no return on plastic. The cost and ease (labor cost) of capping glass is much less...

    Maple brown ale

Why not just buy a sealed can and add that directly to the wort? Already sterile if the can is unopened, assuming you wash the outside of the can first.

    Oh Lord, please help me

How many different colours of food colouring are there? Make each bottle a different colour. Experiment with adding dried fruit to the bottom of some bottles.

Post-apocalyptic brewing (no CO2, no bottle caps)

Most bacteria and other organisms (for instance humans) that break down sugar produce CO2. Lactobacillus do not produce alcohol though, those are used to make the sour beers. Brewers yeast is commonly found in lots of pet foods to boost the protein levels.

Post-apocalyptic brewing (no CO2, no bottle caps)

In a post-apocalyptic world desired taste and preferred "style" are not really a concern, safe consumption is most important. Most ales hundreds of years ago where of a much lower alcohol percentage, just enough to have it reliably safe for consumption. For storage you could build mini kegs, or...

How long after sanitizing a carboy can you still consider it clean?

If sealed *completely* and done under perfectly sterile conditions, indefinitely. I would imagine that it would be safe for quite some time assuming it was properly cleaned before and rinsed well. If you used a no rinse sanitizer before sealing it, without properly rinsing it, that may supply...

In desperate need of help for a fermentation chamber build

If the carboy fits but without the airlock can you pick up a plastic carboy and drill a hole in the neck for a bung and blow off tube that sits in a container of water/sanitizer? Maintain the integrity of the freezer and conserve energy?

    Yet another newbie...

Bought a brew kit for my parents a few years back and they never used it so I confiscated if a couple months back. Grabbed a Brewhouse IPA kit and got my hands dirty, and the coffee table in my man cave, and the tiles, then the back basement... Lesson learned, 23L pail not sufficient especially...
