    Strain or No Strain?

Currently I'm only doing 1-gallon BIAB, so the amount material I have to strain is a small amount. I just wanted to know what other brewers were doing.

    Strain or No Strain?

A lot of great advice. Thank you all. Think I'll try something new each batch and see where it takes me.

    Strain or No Strain?

Just completed my second all-grain home brew. My first brew I finished the boil, stuck a colander over the primary and poured it in. Colander collected a lot of the hops. Beer turned out great (I enjoyed it). My second brew, I just poured everything into the primary. Any thoughts or advice on this?

OK to sanitize bottling bucket/bottles with bleach or something?

Bleach will work fine and you'll defiantly want to do a fresh water rinse. I've done the rinse two ways and didn't notice any difference. First, sanitize with bleach and soaked for 5 minutes, then ran the tap and rinsed thoroughly. Second, sanitize with bleach and soaked for 5 minutes, then...

    First Batch

Thanks Scott. I appreciate the response. Hate to see my first batch regaled to BBQ baste.

    First Batch

Did my first batch of all grain BIAB (1 gallon) lastnight. Everything went well till mash in. Did the 160 degree and then add my bag. Dropped the temp to 150 which was what is was suppose to do. Steeped for 60 minutes TRYING to maintain 150. Noticed even with my stirring, that the wort outside...

    Temp Controlled Fermentation Chamber

I'm getting ready to brew an amber ale this weekend, ideal fermentation temprature should be about 71 degrees. My closet stays about a constant 66 degrees. Going to place the fermenter in a plastic bin with lid on it then into the closet. The fermentation process will generate its own heat...

Any other recent/to be new Dads?

I have an 17 month old daughter (future brewmistress). Going to start All-grain next weekend, so hopefully I'll have a brew partner in a few years. She gets a baby sip of whatever I'm trying at the moment, loves Victory Ale Hop Devil.

    Back in Abilene

Hey Drafter, Could have swore I replied to this post once before. I live in Abilene, going to to start All-grain brewing next week when my stuff gets here and I have a few things to build first. I've elected to go small (1 gallon batches) for the time being do to availability of room. Cheers!

    1 Gallon Yeast Amount

Great answers and I appreciate the help. Went to the Mr. Malty and the calculation seem good to go. Thanks again!

    1 Gallon Yeast Amount

After much deliberation and thought, I'll be jumping into all grain with a one gallon kit. I live in a small apartment, so the size is appealing (wife would not be to happy having to reach around 55 beers for the milk). Cutting the ingredients down is simple math, but does the yeast fall into...

Did I Waste My Money on a Brand New CO2 Tank?

I wouldn't say you wasted money, perhaps lack of knowledge. I've exchanged tanks for years. Sometimes they're new, others are beat to crap. They all pass inspection for safety and usability though. Chock it up to lesson learned.

    New Kettle Defects

I wouldn't say that's a defect, more of a manufacturing blemish. Try taking a very fine grit sand paper (300 or better) and working that spot. Stainless steel is stainless through and through. During elongation of the pot I bet that was just a spot that didn't get enough coolant/lubricant or to...

    Placental Beer

That is the most vile thing I've ever heard of! Goodluck. Would really appreciate to NOT see the recipe or any other details. lol

    Oxiclean ruined my bottles!

I used OxyClean once and had the same results. Was worried about having that residue on my glassware, so I boil all of it and then air dried. A bit time consuming, but piece of mind that I had removed it all. Vinegar and hot water is a good idea.

    Homebrewer's Lament

When I injured my back and they put me on pain meds, I just adjusted my beer intake. Mom didn't raise no quitter!

Do you reuse your muslin bags?

I wouldn't risk reusing bags. As cheap as they are I just use a new bag. If your dead set on reusing the bags then I would do a hot water rinse, try to get it as clean as possible, followed by a soaking in StarSan, another rinse, then air dried.
