    Blood Orange Hefeweizen

I didn't adjust the priming sugar. The juice didn't affect carbonation; I had a nice head on a normal pour

    Blood Orange Hefeweizen

I'm almost through my bottled batch. It's been very popular. One of the things I did was juice three more oranges and mixed it to my priming sugar before bottling. It gave it some added color and bite. But I've noticed that as the beer has aged in the bottle the bitterness has subsided and now...

Lagering an old Oktoberfest kit I had laying around...it'll be done in the spring so I didn't want to name it an Oktoberfest...so I instead paid homage to Clark & family during their European Vacation.

    Lager not taking off

Thanks for the recommendation on the Brewferm. As this is my first lager, didn't really know better. I've brewed primarily with Wyeast for all my ales with good results. Should have looked into the lager yeasts a little more, admittedly. We'll see where this heads. Probably will wait another...

    Lager not taking off

This batch finally started fermenting last night, about 4.5 days and an extra yeast pitch later. It was a relief to see it get going finally. Definitely a learning experience...going to be very patient with this moving forward. Lagers: definitely NOT like brewing an ale! Thanks for everyone's help.

    Lager not taking off

I appreciate your help Topher but don't kill the messenger. I just stated another guy gave me that advice. I didn't say it was correct or that I was going to adopt his strategy. My only consensus after reading recommendations and talking with some people is that the yeast cell count from one...

    Lager not taking off

Thanks for the help. I posted this on the extract brewing forum and got some advice there as well. One of the guys there said that he would raise the temp back up to 65, pitch again and once fermentation signals to drop back down to lager temps. I'll check back on it tonight when I get out of...

    Lager not taking off..why?

Thanks for everyone's help. As far as aeration, it was poured through a fine mesh strainer 3x before the 1st pitch. Wort had a big frothy head. The 2nd pitch I stirred in vigorously and created a deep whirlpool action. I will check status when I get home from work today, hopefully I have...

    Lager not taking off..why?

It was basically just want the recommendation was on the packet. Several ounces of lukewarm water and a small amount of sugar...stir it up and let it sit for a short amount of time.

    Lager not taking off..why?

I checked my seal as a potential culprit of no airlock activity, but ultimately the same hydro reading as my OG reading at 1st pitch is the main concern.

    Lager not taking off..why?

Yes the 1st was a direct pitch. The 2nd pitch I did with a starter of 4oz of room temp water and 2 teaspoons of corn sugar. Swirled it up and let sit for a couple hours and created a little head. Then pitched that and stirred in well.

    Blood Orange Hefeweizen

Here's my finished product. Turned out pretty well...the wife likes it and overall it's been praised by friends and family. My opinion...it's good, but not my favorite. I got my color to where it looks reddish by adding juice of three more blood oranges at bottling. I think it, however, may...

    Lager not taking off..why?

I posted this in the beginner forum but no replies. Hopefully someone can help... So I brewed the Brewers Best Oktoberfest kit on Thursday night which is my first lager. Everything else I've done are either ale kits or ale recipes. Making it was smooth as butter: boil/cool/aerate/pitch. OG was...

    Lager not taking off

Brewed the Brewers Best Oktoberfest kit which is my first lager. Everything else I've done are either ale kits or ale recipes. So everything was smooth as butter: boil/cool/aerate/pitch. OG was right on point: 1.053. So I pitched the Brewferm dry lager yeast at around 11pm Thursday. After...

    Blood Orange Hefeweizen

Have this in primary right now; had 1 bubble every 2 seconds less than 10 hrs in. Smells great already. I've seen a lot of people say they don't get much orange hints with the recipe suggestion...I have only the 4 blood oranges + zest going so my question is...any way to boost the orange...

    First batch results...

I've actually just bottled batch #3 but my first has been very popular both with friends both on drinkability and pop culture reference for my generation. I'm officially "addicted" to the hobby...thanks all for the help/tips along the way. Here's to many more...

What Brewers Best Extract Kits do you like?

I have done the American Amber and Kölsch. Both were well received but I got a lot of compliments on the Kölsch, even though its not a true Kölsch due to the Nottingham yeast. Still, a damn good beer that I will make again.

    Old Wyeast smack pack/starter

Quick update on this...after a week in starter, the yeast finally started to wake up. I brewed on Thursday night and pitched...and 36 hours later have the most active fermentation I've ever had. Came home from work Friday to find a blow out. Had to install a blow off tube overnight and now I...
