    Stout kits?

Surprisingly NB doesn't mention whether or not the recipe kit comes with yeast or not. It honestly fails to mention exactly what it comes with at all haha. But given the product reviews on the ones I looked at, I wouldn't worry about it. But if I had to guess, I would say they just include dry...

Just bought some oak barrels. Need a little info.

I honestly see no point in it. It's probably best to just barrel it as is. The campden tablets are good for fighting infections but in this case it's not necessary. As long as you cleaned it out thoroughly using hot water several times you should be fine. What's the worst that could happen? When...

    Burner Preference, Help me decide.

This is probably a good place to post this and anyone reading this may be able to help me as well. I got a bayou classic burner this is 13" in diameter which was perfect for my small 5 gallon kettle. But now that I have upgraded to AG I have a 15 gallon kettle that is short, fat, and 16 3/4" in...

Too big of a blow off bucket/jar

This thread brings up an interesting question I have about blow off tubes. When I was fermenting my RIS it required a blow off tube and ended up just attaching a 1/2" tube onto the top of my air lock. Fit perfectly actually. But I certainly wouldn't want to do that again. Does anyone know the...

    Oak barrels

From all the material I have read online everything said not to use chemicals like sulfates because it will decay the charred oak on the inside of the barrel. When used hot water I constantly washed it out with fresh hot water. After that, I added my beer. But again, I posted a thread before...

    Smack Pack/Yeast Starter

You can do what you like or what you feel is right. But when it really comes down to it there's no real "correct" answer to that. The only time I made a starter with a Wyeast smack pack I just smacked it and poured it in to the starter. No swelling required. I had it on a stir plate for 36 hours...

    beginner beer brewer (need advice)

My first batch was a red ale which turned out great! If you are brewing from a kit then you shouldn't have many problems. The key to brewing is easy, just stick to the basics. Follow the directions and be sure to sanitize everything (basically anything that will come into contact with the beer)...

    1yr since I recieved my Mr.Beer, I learned...

To make a beer with a higher abv you will need to add more malt. The more malt there is the more sugar there will be for the yeast to eat, thus creating more alcohol. That is given that you have used an appropriate amount of yeast by using a yeast starter.

    Oak barrels

I'm currently aging my RIS in a used whiskey barrel. I just washed it out a couple times with warm water to wash out any loose particles inside and to also check for any possible leaks.

    Bottle conditioning in a growler?

I've carb'd in 1/2 gallon growlers as well. Several times actually. Always been fine. I think it all depends on the temp of the place you are carbing/aging in. I've done this in my upstairs pantry as well as my basement. No problem.

    Brewers best fermentation question..

I want to chime in here as well as I too first started with Brewers Best kits. Which are okay.. I've since moved on to All Grain but if I'm looking to do an extract kit I'd rather get one from AHS or NB. Anyway from my experience using Brewers Best kits I have fermented a batch for 2 weeks in...

Did not rehydrate yeast for high gravity brew

I always rehydrate the yeast when using dry yeast. It allows the yeast to wake up and get ready for fermentation. If you choose not to rehydrate, it will just take longer for the yeast to start fermenting the beer. Which just means a longer fermentation time. Just take the 10 mins it takes to...

    Whiskey Barrel Aging Cleaning/Sanitation

Okay so I received an 8 gallon whiskey barrel for Christmas which I plan to use this upcoming weekend to age my RIS in. (Going with 4 wks primary then 2wks barrel) Kind of short aging with the RIS but I'd like to take it to my homebrew club for tasting on the 14th next month. So here is my...

Going to do my first brew Wednesday.

You will most likely want to at least try all grain brewing at some point. That is if you remain hooked on brewing which it seems like you already are. The chiller looks alright, doesn't have to be SS though. I've seen cheaper ones on eBay. Honestly though I made one myself from 20' of copper...

Trial and Tribulation of first All Grain batch

Could go either way I think. Just depends on the brewer. I've seen guys drink RIS before at just a month old. And believe it or not but they tasted great. I have big plans for my RIS though. I'll probably do 6 weeks primary and then 3 weeks in a freshly dumped whiskey barrel:D
