Reese's beer fail - lesson learned.

Wow those pictures are nasty! Although the second one looks a lot like chicken taco meat but I guess it sure didn't smell like that. Risk taking is awesome and it takes guts to share your failures with others so they don't make the same mistake. Thanks for that. Pat

Cut back on Beer because the belly is too big?

When you feel like crap or you don't like looking in the mirror anymore. Mine was a little of both. Pat

Cut back on Beer because the belly is too big?

I agree with most of this and follow a lot of it. There are some great things in the center of the store but agree with the concept. Black beans and canned chicken ( when no time to cook the real stuff) are two I like. As for calorie counting, I've been doing that religiously (except for the...

Cut back on Beer because the belly is too big?

I stopped drinking during the week at all and workout 6 days a week so I can enjoy myself on the weekends. I still don't go crazy on the weekends (although we did get into quite a few BCS's in Chicago Saturday:drunk:) I feel your pain and refuse to be a fat bastard anymore. I do find that the...

Ale and lager yeast co exist?

You know, we did a Czech pils with 10 gallons and fermented a 1335 ale yeast with half of it at 54 degrees. Find an ale yeast that goes that low and it could work I'd think?? Pat

    Partial mash help

Are you using your AG equipment or his? You can steep the grains in your mash tun just like in all grain brewing. If you aren't using a tun, you could pass it through a colander after steeping. Pat

building a 10 gallon cooler mash tun

Interestingly, I just had a different problem with the mesh it mash tun. My stirring during the mash actually lifted the screen up (without me knowing it until after unfortunately). Because of that and the risk of that happening again, I think I'm going to a false bottom. It tanked my...

Cold China Brew - Tips for Cold Weather Brewing

Nice! As for the glass bottles, wouldn't a quick dunk in 200+ degree water make for a shatter risk? That's why I thought plastic but get the point of the poster above on that and will leave that by the wayside. I guess I've invested a lot already in this hobby (read: obsession) so a...

Vinyl tubing and high temps question

I use this stuff http://www.northernbrewer.com/shop/brewing/brewing-equipment/siphoning-equipment/tubing/high-temp-tubing/3-8-id-thermoplastic-tubing-1.html and although it withstands heat very well, it is terribly stiff which makes it unwieldy IMO. I would like something less stiff and haven't...

Cold China Brew - Tips for Cold Weather Brewing

I plan to brew next week in the garage in WI. I have similar concerns about the gas tank freezing and the wort chiller freezing. I am also concerned about creating an ice rink in my yard with the discharge water from the chiller. I was thinking about using frozen gallon jugs of water...

First Dunkelweizen recipe-comments?-Like Dark and Curvy

Thanks for the info on the nibs. As for the chocolate wheat, that's just for color as I thought that's what you'd use to darken a wheat beer, I will change that to regular chocolate malt based on what you said. As for temps, I am fortunate to live in WI. My basement is 64 and my passive...

First Dunkelweizen recipe-comments?-Like Dark and Curvy

Thanks. Do you guys secondary your dunkelweizens? I was thinking not, as with hefeweizens. If I do, then the nibs would work and sound like a great idea. Do they impart a chocolate flavor similar to cocoa or something else? I really appreciate the feedback guys (or gals). Thanks, Pat

First Dunkelweizen recipe-comments?-Like Dark and Curvy

Hello, I plan to make a 5.5 gal Dunkelweizen. It will be the first AG recipe I tried to develop myself. I used Jamil's book plus other recipes on this and other sites to try and come up with something great. My favorite dunkelweizen is actually Dark and Curvy from Piece Brewery in Chicago. I...

    AG dunkelweizen with chocolate?

Hello, I am planning to brew a dunkelweizen similar to the one in Jamil's classic styles book. To try and jazz it up a bit, I want to add some chocolate flavor to it. I'd like the flavor to be noticable but mild and not "in your face". What would you recommend I use for that effect? Cocoa...

Full Boil vs Partial Boil - Questions

I ended up doing the full boil without waiting for the late addition. It seemed to go pretty well. The fermenter is bubbling away so we'll see I guess. Pat

Full Boil vs Partial Boil - Questions

Awesome thread, albeit a couple months old. I have a 10 gallon pot and a favorite extract kit (hefeweizen from NB). The hop schedule is the same as their AG recipe so I am going to do a full boil to see if I can improve on excellent. I plan to start with 6 gal as I have a wide, fat kettle...
