    Friend tried Alpha King

Funny little story here.... My wife ran across some Alpha King at the store and brought some home. That same night, my buddy stops by asks for something to drink so I told him to try some Alpha King (he never heard of it before). After a small sip he makes the same face a baby does the first...

WYeast 2124 Bohemian lager not fermenting 5 days

I pitched 2124 Bohemian lager on Sunday. It has been in my fridge @ ~ 50* for 5 days and so far no signs of fermentation. Is this normal? If it doesn't ferment soon should I pitch another one? Thanks

    Question about relocating my hops

This is the first year I purchased hops (from freshops). I planted 6 different varieties in spring. The tallest one is about 6/7 feet and the shortest one is only 3 feet or so. None of them have produced any cones. I think this happened because that area gets less sunlight than I originally...

getting accurate gravity readings during sparge

This may be just a noob question, but here it goes: I was told that gravity readings are not very accurate if the runnings are very hot. I was brewing last night, watching the gravity readings to ensure that I didn't go below the 1.008 - 1.012 reading but I know it couldn't have been...

What to do with these grains?

One of my friends just started homebrewing. Right now he only does extract. For his birthday, his kids bought him a Kolsch all-grain kit for a 5 gallon batch. Since he only does extract, he had no use for the grains and gave them to me. :rockin: That got me thinking: what else could I...

First Wort Hopping - anyone experience with this?

I read this article that discusses adding the hops to the brew kettle at the beginning of your sparge instead of at boil. They say this enhances the bitterness of your brew. Anyone ever try this technique If so, have you seen positive results?? Here is the link to the article I read...

    Pat my own back

Alright, I have to pat my own back here. I have been extract and PM brewing for about a year now. It was definitely time to move to AG. I brewed my first AG about 1 month ago and I really screwed it up. Mash and sparge temperatures and times were way out of wack. In addition, I got a few...

    gravity question

Hello, I did my first all grain last weekend. :rockin: I went with the Nukey Brown Ale (NewCastle clone?) from Northern Brewer because I thought it was a relatively easy one to start with. NB said the gravity after sparging should be between 1.008 - 1.012; however, my gravity turned...

    Brew Kettle

hello all, Getting ready for all grain..... Would you happen to know the best/most economical place to get a 10 gallon brew kettle (w/ spigot and thermometer)? I looked on CraigsList (Chicago) and ebay and haven't had much luck Northerbrewer has a stainless steel kettle w/ spigot and...

how long until my lager starts fermenting

I made my first lager on Monday afternoon. It has been in my temp. controlled fridge @ approximately 50 F, since Monday afternoon. How long until it starts fermenting? I haven't seen any activity in the airlock yet... Ales seems to start by the next day... Thanks all! :)

    Left over grains

hello, I have some left over grains and was wondering how long I can hold onto them? I put them in a ziplock freezer bag. Do they go bad after a given amount of time? If so, how long?? Thanks

    Dry yeast

Hello all, I'm newer to homebrewing, so sorry if I ask stupid questions... Currently, I am making an American Cream Ale. This time, I used the dry yeast instead of the WYeast. After about three days, it appears that it stopped fermenting because the airlock wasn't bubbling anymore...

    Hello from Chicago

Hello all, this is my first post. I've been extract brewing for about 1 year now. I LOVE IT! I stumbled across this board when I was looking for answers about using ale yeast in a lager recipe. I wonder how it would turn out.... :drunk: Thanks, Boothbrew

Using ale yeast in a lager recipe

This is my first post, so please forgive me if I miss something.... I was curious how an extract lager would turn out if I used an ale yeast. I saw some recipes on nothernbrewer and they said it was possible to substitute the yeast if you couldn't ferment at the lower temperature.... Does...
