    Wort chillers?

Just curious, but don't wort chillers consume A LOT of water to cool the wort? I kinda have a problem with the concept of running water for 10 or more minutes when I could use 2 bags of ice (and thus lots less water). Thanks in advance.

    Steeping Grains

I've seen a couple of extract recipes that suggest you steep your grains until the water starts to boil. Don't the grains start to get astringent if you steep above 170F? I always thought a better idea would be to steep at 160F or so for 30 minutes or longer, remove and then proceed to boil...

    Airlock fouling?

I came upon my amber in primary today in my cooler. The airlock had been fouled by an overactive fermentation in my cooler (set to 63 F + or - 3 degrees). Beer had bubbled up into the airlock and pushed out all the water. I immediately cleaned the airlock when I discovered the problem and...

    Scotch Ale

I did make one modification (by mistake) in that I added 8 oz. of Briess black patent (wasn't paying close enough attention to what I was doing). Anyway, I...

    Stuck Fermentation?

I've brewed a batch of brown ale from a kit. The ale seemed to be fermenting just fine for the first 18 hours or so, then I went away for the evening. When I came back, I noticed 1) the yeast was not bubbling from the airlock so vigorously (bubble once every two minutes or so) and 2) the...
