Sorry, I should have explained better. Hops go outside of the tube, just like no screen at all. The draining liquid goes thru the screen on the way out.

Yes, I ran the auto-tune. I was concerned that if I just turned off the contactor, and did not run the temperature down, the PID would continue to "learn" even though the system was not heating.

As I get closer to finishing up, I realize the importance of the contactor to positively kill the element. My question is: after I shut off the 240v to the SSR with the contactor, does the PID try to change it's settings because the temp is not rising?

yeah,they're overkill. I bought them for cheap for something else, you know how priorities change!
