Thoughts on this counter flow chiller. The CRAB

I have thought about them but that kind of takes away done of the DIY for me. I was going to use either tap water or the steam beside my house for the cold water source.

Thoughts on this counter flow chiller. The CRAB

A test would certainly give results either way. I feel that the wort making 90 degree turns inside the tube would cause more turbulence and mort of the wort would be in contact with the cold pipe rather than the wort just flowing straight through the pipe. The wort on the outside of the hot...

Thoughts on this counter flow chiller. The CRAB

Yep. I was thinking about this way too hard and it's like trying to reinvent the wheel.

    Angle grinder or cut off?

Angle grinder all the way but swap out the stone for a 1/16" think cut off disk. Just go slow and they cut metal like butter.

In series both with turns to keep the wort moving around and a stick.

Thoughts on this counter flow chiller. The CRAB

Good idea. I though of a few different designs but not about making it act as one long tube. Better yet, why not save $$$ on fittings and make a single tube about 6' long.

Thoughts on this counter flow chiller. The CRAB

I couldn't agree more about me creating work for myself and over engineering this thing. I just like to make things. As for the flow issues, I have a few Shurflo RV water pumps laying around. They typically move 3-5 gallons per minute at 45 PSI. I figured even if splitting the flow 4 ways and...

Thoughts on this counter flow chiller. The CRAB

I'm thinking of building one of these to use as my chiller. Something about the coil of copper tubing is just too simple for me. I estimate this would cost about $100 in materials. The water lines would run completely through the larger wort lines. You could feed it with whatever temp cold...

What Batch Sparge efficiency are you getting?

I don't really have much input on this rather a question about my own efficiency. I recently brewed my first AG batch. It's a simple Cream Ale. 7 lbs Rahr - 2 row pale .75 lbs - Gambrinus Honey Malt .25 lbs - Belgian Biscuit Malt The directions said: Sacch’ Rest: 150° F for 60...

Sorry, forgot to mention the volume of honey. It was 24oz that I added.

Rye Pale Ale Brewer's best kit with honey addition.

The other day I made a Rye Pale Ale using a brewer's best kit. Here's a link to the recipe. The kit says the OG should have been 1.050 - 1.055 with an FG of 1.012 - 1.015. When I checked my OG once it was cool and it was only 1.035@65°. (I made very sure I really stirred in the extra water...

    Thoughts on this wort chiller?

Made an English Bitter Monday evening and this chiller of mine dropped the wort from boil to 65 degrees in 6 minutes. I had the chiller in a 7 gallon bucket of ice water and the wort was recirculated back into the boil kettle until cool. Worked we well as running the coolant through the...

I don't feat the foam, BUT...

I've seen videos and read about this foaming. It seems strange to me to fill the keg or carboy with all that foam in there. I would always remove all of it before I filled it. I assume it is ok to do this but having that much non-beer chemical mixed in with the beer bothers me.
