Wroxbrew's 20 gallon stout tank build

I don't find that it adds anything to clean-up. The whirlpool actually works quite well if you have the patience. It adds time, which as we all know can be in short supply. I have run low on time on a few batches and wirlpooling is where I tend to make it up when things are behind schedule. When...

Wroxbrew's 20 gallon stout tank build

Thanks. I just got a fridge for my kegs for free, but is the wrong type for the fermenter. I hope to get a setup for the fermenter, but I have other basement issues I have to deal with to make it a good spot for fermenting and my kitchen is too small for a second Fridge.

Wroxbrew's 20 gallon stout tank build

Hi Stonebrewer. Hopefully I can shed a little insight on these issues for you. 1. Mash Tun temp gauge. I originally had the same issues as you, and this is what I've found. First, the gauges are not calibrated from the factory, so the first thing I did was to fill it with 150 degree water. I...

Wroxbrew's 20 gallon stout tank build

    1. I realized that I had run out of Citra! I thought I had a lb. left, but it turns out I didn't. :( I did manage to locate some and I'm waiting on delivery. On a good note, My original batch that has been aging has gotten significantly better and less one dimensional. Only 3 22's left of it...

Wroxbrew's 20 gallon stout tank build

Thanks. I am very happy overall with this setup and getting better brewing each batch I make. 1. I have no regrets. The system works as it was Intended. Both Stout tanks and all the great info from everyone on this forum actually made the process of building this relatively painless. I am...

    My 1 bbl. system build

I have read in other posts that it is not a great idea to have a 90 degree bend to close to the outlet of the pumps (cavitation issues). You may find you will need an extension before the 3 way valve to get it farther away from the outlet. YMMV.

how quickly does your herms step up?

Yes , I do understand this. I can get to about a 2 degree difference with the correct flow and I'm measuring the temp at the inlet to my mash tun. The one thing I've been thinking though, is that although the HLT temp is higher, the wort entering is cooler and that not all the heat is...

Wroxbrew's 20 gallon stout tank build

Thanks, I'm thinking of making it my next IPA, as my Citra (3c's) recipe was a little off. It came out really one dimensional in both malt flavor and bitterness. Not bad, but not great either. I'm going to try to stock up on some more Amarillo as this one seems to disappear quickly. I have a...

how quickly does your herms step up?

I did some preliminary new testing on my 20 gal system just last brew, and rate of flow through my herms can change the temp at the mash inlet over 8 degrees. Too fast, and the temp will be too low, and if too slow, the temp will reach about 2 degrees below my HLT set point but take too long. I...

Wroxbrew's 20 gallon stout tank build

That's where I'm heading. A 2 or 3 barrel Nano. This will eventually be my test batch system in the brewery. I have an LLC setup and currently looking for a commercial space so I can get started on the licensing. Just to confirm, All the ports have 1.5" tri-clamp fittings. We were discussing...

Wroxbrew's 20 gallon stout tank build

I just picked up a bunch of Amarrilo. I might have to try that. I've never combined Citra/Amarillo together. Looks like a good recipe. I use nugget also as my bittering hop. Let me know how yours comes out.

Wroxbrew's 20 gallon stout tank build

It's just a recipe I've been playing around with. I'm using late addition citra/centennial and dry hopping with citra/cascade. Kinda a 3c's ipa actually. I just had some out of the keg this weekend and it has a nice melon with a hint of pineapple thing going on. It's a nice change from the big...

Wroxbrew's 20 gallon stout tank build

I was away this weekend. Glad John answered your questions. I thought the whirlpool port was smaller. I'm using 3/4 hose barbs out of the bottom ports of all my kettles to my center inlet chugger pumps. I've never been to Portland, but it's on my bucket list.

Kegging-how long do you wait to drink it?

Unfortunately I'm not using a bucket. I'm coming straight out of a 20 gallon SS conical.

Wroxbrew's 20 gallon stout tank build

I think everything is 3/4" except possibly the whirlpool port on the boil kettle. I'm working late tonite, so I wont be able to give you a definitive answer on that one till tomorrow. The valves that come with the stout tanks are not full port. They have a 5/8" inside diameter, so there is some...

Thanks for the info. This was the first time I've used wlp028. For some reason mine got stuck at 1.020 during week 2 when my fermenter temp dipped to 64 with no signs of action. I was worried it was finished there, but I brought it up a few degrees and it perked up and finished at 1.014 after a...

How long to dry hop in the secondary?

This should come out great. I'm about to do this with 1oz Amarillo/1 oz Simcoe in my IPA.
