    Lager advice needed

Oh, I'm planning on being patient, I just wondered if it was common for there to be reasonably significant activity for 7 days, followed by nothing for 3. My buddy already pulled it out and set it at about 65 yesterday, and when I finally get home Saturday or Sunday I'll do another reading and...

    Lager advice needed

Crap, I meant 8/28. So, it's been about 10 days. My only children was that it fermented from 1.036 to 1.022 in a week, then didn't move at all for 2 days. Regardless, I'm glad to hear raising the temp sounds good/like it will work. Thanks!

    Lager advice needed

Hello all, I'm in need of your collective expert advice yet again :drunk: I brewed my first lager (Extract kit from "The Home Brewery") on 8/28. Everything went well, based on the advice here I pitched 2 packets of S-23 at 50 degrees and put it in my fermenting fridge. After about 12 hours I...

My Red Rye IPA brewed this past Sunday taste watered down.

Doesn't the carbonation/bottle conditioning phase help with that "thin" or "watery" mouthfeel problems? EDIT: I know much of the conversation has been about getting a hydro reading, but if the OP is concerned about the watery taste, read this thread...

    Just started

Welcome! This is a great place, lot of helpful/knowledgeable folks around here.

Lets see your hop harvest pics...

Those look great! I'd really like to grow my own, sounds like it takes a year or two before you get decent yields? I live in Indiana, so I imagine it'll be a bit tougher.

    Boiling water... Yup...

We'll need a bit more info. Size pot? Electric/gas?

    Second gravity reading

Others with more experience can correct me, but as far as I understand you'd never add the corn sugar until the fermentation is complete and you're ready to bottle. What you do with the gravity readings is determine whether the fermentation has completed or not. You know this based on having...

    Lagering questions

I've noted this, will take a gravity reading approx 5-7 days in. If I'm about 75% there, I'll go ahead and raise the temp a bit. Thanks again! I've ordered another packet. Thanks!

    Lagering questions

Ah, that makes a lot more sense. So, I'll get my wort to the 48-50 range, pitch and let ferment about a week (depending on how it responds), then when fermentation appears to be winding down raise it to 60-65 range for a couple days, followed by racking to my secondary and lagering at the 32-38...

    Lagering questions

Thanks! I'll activate the yeast before I pitch it. I'll get the wort down to approx 60 degrees, pitch, and let it cool down to approx 50. About a week into fermentation, I'll bring the temp up to 65ish for 2 full days, then move it back to approx 50 for another week or so. At that point I'll...

    Lagering questions

Hey all, Thanks for the help on my first batch, it is currently clearing in my secondary, final gravity was hit after about 5 days. Tastes good, letting it sit for another week and I'll bottle. If I had more time I'd probably just bottle it now, but everyone tells me the longer I wait the...

    Pumpkin Ale

I personally haven't brewed this (I'm brand new too, fermenting my first batch now) but I found this thread, had some good info about that particular kit: https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f37/just-brewed-midwest-supplies-pumpkin-ale-208562/ Google/forum search is your friend, there are a bunch of...

Oh, gotcha, didn't think about that. Thanks again!

    Timing question/advice needed

My kit came with a 5 gallon carboy as a "secondary". Should I just use that as a primary? Instead of moving brew 1 from primary to secondary, just leave it in the primary for 3-4 weeks, while using my carboy in the same way for brew 2? That would be way easier than moving it over to my...

    Timing question/advice needed

:tank: Basically, that's what happened. My buddy and I followed everything to a "T", but had drank enough beer that we didn't even think about the temp. Regarding the room temp, its difficult to get it down to less than 70 because my entire house is 72-75 degrees in the summer. However, in...

    Timing question/advice needed

Would it hurt for me to take it out of the primary after a week and move it to the secondary? Again, only because I want to free up my primary for another brew :)

    Timing question/advice needed

Thanks! The main reason I'm moving mine to a secondary is to free up my primary for another brew :mug: With a minimum of 4 weeks from brew to being able to drink, I want to get 2/3 different brews in bottles so I've got a good pipeline. Of course, 3 brews is 150 bottles :o so I suppose I...

    Timing question/advice needed

Hello all! After months of lurking, reading, more lurking, and more reading, I decided to embark on this fascinating journey of homebrewing. Went to my "local" store (45 minutes one way) and was set up with a kit including a primary, bottling, carboy, and all the various siphons/bottling...
