I would agree that its not a technique issue. Its an issue of patience. Im a noob myself but all of my HB has improved with patience. Sometimes its hard to wait when even "green HB" taste soooo much better than 3/4 of the commercial brews out there.

my temp controller powers on/off a power strip. Plugged into this are my fridge and internal fan. The fan just sits inside pointed at my carboy with the cord going out between the door/body. I'm guessing that your gonna bottle the batch before ya leave. If it were my brew I would put the bottles in a cardboard box on top of the fridge where its nice n warm. This will ensure that the yeasts will continue to work. Then make sure the MRS transfers to the inside of the fridge a few days...

I know it helps to clear the beer by having the particles in suspension fall to the trub layer... but how does this benefit the beer ? Taste better ? Smells better ? Better head ? Lasts longer ? Other ? Or is simply to have a more transparent drink ?
