    Brew experiment

I was planning on using alfa enzymes to convert the starches. I have successfully used the mastication method mentioned in another post of mine I'll have to dig it up. Basically you chew up and spit out a starch. I'll have to add lentils to the list. I have had a beer made with chest nuts and...

    Brew experiment

So I have been trying different ingredients. My last batch I put potatoes in it and the batch befor I did oatmeal. I want to do a set of batches exactly the same except for the main fermentable. I'm thinking this will give me the chance to determine the different fermentables taist post...

    Dark Ice Tea.

I think it may be something else that is throwing my reading off. The beer finished at 1.03. The alcohol content taisted right in the beer, it wasnt sweet at all or anything like that. Maybe my float is off or its the ice tea giving me bad readings.

    Beer with black tea?

I wouldn't leave the tea bag in anything for more than a few hours. You start to get off flavors from the tea leaves.

    Do malted grains taist different?

Thanks for the info. I want to make a bunch of one gallon batches with essentially the same ingredients except for the grains. I was thinking, try out different grains and different combinations of grains would give me a base line of what grains taisted like in gluten free beer. So maybe now...

    Beer with black tea?

If you where wondering, I thought earthy spicy tones in the hops to complement the tea. Also I think I had seen a chi tea beer on here a wile back, but I dont think they used tea at all in there beer.

    Do malted grains taist different?

No im asking, if you make a beer with sorghum malt extract and then you make a beer with sorghum grain that has been gelatinized and had alpha enzymes added to it so the starches are turned into sugars, will those beer taist the same?

    Do malted grains taist different?

I kinda feel like this is a stupid question but im asking it anways. If you convert the starches in grains with enzymes will they taist the same as malted grains in beer? I've looked and I can't seem to find the answer.

    Dark Ice Tea.

It was a 5.5 gallon batch. I did add a lot of water and took my sample from the bottom. I have never had a batch that far off so I was just wondering.

    Dark Ice Tea.

So I finally got around to making this beer up. In the final recipe I added 2 lbs of oats, I prepared them like I talked about in this thread, "what to do with oats". In beersmith my gravity was supposed to be 1.039 SG but I came out with a gravity of 1.073. What did I do wrong? That seems...

    Malting Gluten Free Grains

Yeah, I'm one of those people that it matters to. I'm sensitive down to like 5ppm. Have you washes grains before all the particulates float. So as long as there are no whole grains in there washing would take everything out. Just to let you know about the dedicated field thing... if there is a...

What do oats do? And how do I use them?

So I thought I would write out a process of how I plan on using the oats in a gluten free beer in case anyone else wanted to try it out or just wanted to know more about oats. Thanks for all the information so far it really help to find out what I needed to look up. If there is any information...

What do oats do? And how do I use them?

So if they don't say instant oats do I need to cook them and mill them? Then they will be able to be steeped? Or do I still need enzymes. This is why I'm confused. I guess I could just chew them and spit them out that would add the enzymes I need. T

What do oats do? And how do I use them?

Bobs Red Mill has certified gluten free oats that I have used with no ill effects. I seeped them on a beer before and it really didn't seem to do anything. That's why I am asking. When you say "mashed" does that require a mash tun, or can I do it some other way? Also does the mash require malted...

What do oats do? And how do I use them?

I'm a little confused on what oats do in a brew. I have heard that they improve head retention and make the beer thicker. I'm planing on doing a gluten free extract brew and they always come out thin, so I thought why not throw some oats in there that will thicken it up. Right?... Should I...

    Dark Ice Tea.

    So I was thinking something like this: (60 mins) 4 lbs 8.0 oz - Brown Rice Syrup (60 mins) 1 lbs - Candi Sugar, Extra Dark Aromatic (60 mins) 1 lbs - Milk Sugar (Lactose) (60 mins) 1.00 oz - Cascade [3.20 %] (30 mins) 1.00 oz - Liberty [3.40 %] (15 mins) 1.00 oz - Perle [7.80 %] (10 mins)...

    Dark Ice Tea.

I was thinking... Cascade - 60 min Perle (German) - 30mins Perle (German) - 15mins Black Tea - 15mins Any thoughts? I'm thinking the Tea will make it a little more bitter so I should not put as much bittering hops in. Anyone have any ideas. Is this going to be a good hop combo for what I'm...
