    1 year anniversary

I am super stoked to get home tonight!! 1 year ago today, I bottled my first ever batch of beer. It was an Irish Red extract kit. I saved 1 bottle of each batch and plan to drink it on the anniversary date. Man, when I bottled it, one year seemed so far away, but looking back it sure has...

    Floating globs of yeast cake?!?

So I tried my hand at a Bell's Two-Hearted Ale clone about 3 weeks ago. It was my first time using WL Califorina Ale liquid yeast, everything went smoothly on brew day - until I realized about 2 days into primary fermentation that I never did aerate as well as I usually do. I did stir in the...

    Gravity reading of carbed beer??

Is it possible to get an accurate gravity reading if there is already carbonation in the beer? Or will the carbonation cause the reading to be higher or lower than actual? Thanks for your help!

It just really gets under my skin...

It just bothers me when people say, "Oh, no thanks - I don't want to drink your home brew because I don't want to go blind" or another one I can't stand is, "You actually drink the beer you make? I wouldn't do that, I'd be too scared since you aren't professional". To the last one I say, "I...

Best way to steep the flavor from whole nutmeg and whole cinnamon sticks

I had this bright idea to add the flavor of Nutmeg and Cinnamon to my cider. Last batch, I just put the ground cinnamon powder into about 2 cups of boiling water for a few 5 minutes, then let it cool and added the cooled cinnamon water to the finsihed cider in the bottling bucket. But I found...

Most bone-headed thing I've done in a while!!

So this weekend, I decided to make a kegerator. I have had this mini-fridge since college, and really I didn't have any use for it, its just taking up space in my garage... It is a Magic Chef 4.4 cu ft, so I measured the inside dimentions and it will fit my keg and co2 tank perfectly, with a...

Anyone have any lines on CHEAP soda/corny kegs?

So I have been brewing for about 7 months and I decided that I would jump into the kegging game as of yesterday. I picked up a pretty sweet deal from my LHBS with 2 ball-locks and a Taprite Dual regulator and a 10 lb tank for a pretty good price. But to me, the $55-$60 price tag on additional...

    The process of Dry hopping

So, I am still relatively new. I have made 7 batches now, however all have been just out of a box Extract kit. Tomorrow I plan on brewing my first batch that I buy all of the ingredients by my self. So the recipe I found calls for dry hopping at the 13 day mark. So I have a few questions...

I think I might have screwed up...

So I'm going through my inventory today, and I realize that I have an extra bag of priming sugar. So I'm pretty sure that my last batch I bottled, a BMC Light clone, never got priming sugar - just bottled Wort. So can I save this batch by putting the bottles back into a bottling bucket and...

Confused by a light ale (with pics)

So I am looking to bottle my next batch today. The FG finished out at 1.006, which is lower than the 1.010 target, but I'm okay with that. The main reason for my post is these weird bubbles that look like they contain yeast still... So should I let it sit in primary? Rack to secondary for a...

    Warm to cold to warm...

Okay, dumb question, I know. But I have a few batches in the fridge now and need a little room, for a new couple. If I had let it bottle condition for 3 weeks, the have had it in the fridge for a week, can I pull them back out and sit at 68? Or will that cause off flavors like skunking?

    Dumb question...

So lets preface by saying I'm new... I'm curious, if i backsweten and then bottle carb my cider, will that raise the alcohol content from when I checked the SG-FG? I'm just wondering about the yeast eating up the new sugars...

    Am I weird?

I actually ejoyed bottling. Last night was my first attempt at bottling a batch. I learned 2 things... 1.) My diswasher takes FOREVER (1.5 hrous) to do a light wash (without soap of course) - I had some downtime while waiting for it... :drunk: 2.) I REALLY need an Auto-siphon. I ended up...

    Sanitizing only for Hydrometer reading

Alright guys, I have searched for a while to no avail to figure out the best process for checking the FG of my beew in a few weeks... So, I just started my first ever batch yesterday, and was able to sanitize everything with the pack of One Step that came in the kit I purchased. In total it...

Brand New and Rarin' to go...

Hey guys, I love that I stumbled onto this community, with a little help from a buddy who has been brewing for the last year. I've kicked around the idea for some time, but finally made the choice to start after reading through the Forums Sunday. Its funny because I never really knew that...
