How do I use this hop spider I built?

Is that a SS sink drain collar type thing? Looks easy enough to make. Nice work.

How much do you pay for bottles?

If you are in the Minneapolis area, The Four Firkins specialty beer store gives out free bottles. They offer a lot of free tastings so they go through quite a few bottles. You'll have to remove labels, rinse/sanitize etc.

    Future of ball lock kegs?

This makes sense. You can't take them out to clean them which isn't a big deal. But you can replace them if they break for some reason. Thanks!

How I keep hops out my my plate chiller

    Ah! Yes! Excellent point! :mug:

    Future of ball lock kegs?

Good point. I'll ask a different way. Has anybody purchased a new unused ball lock keg and found that they can't repair/replace posts, rings, valves etc? I'm thinking it's BS as well but had to ask. I think I found my answer...

    Future of ball lock kegs?

I've heard that the posts/valves/rings on the brand new ball lock kegs are not replaceable? It seems silly to me. Any truth to that?

How I keep hops out my my plate chiller

I would imagine this process also helps to aerate the wort a bit before pitching. I wouldn't rely on this as the only way to do it but more aeration can't hurt. Thanks for yet another reason to get a pump and a plate chiller. :mug:

American Pale Ale Da Yooper's House Pale Ale

I picked up the grains and hops for this today. I'll be brewing it on Saturday. I also picked up the Wyeast 1056 and realized I had some harvested 1272. Has anybody done this recipe with both and have any preferences? (Not with both in the same batch. However that might be interesting to...

How long is TOO long in secondary?

When it's a crusty dried up pile of dust in the bottom of the carboy, it's probably been too long. Beer for years in a carboy...I'll get there someday.

    Help! Skeptical Friends!

To the OP: You mentioned that you baked and they like your cookies and cake. Well..no more cookies and cake for your friends because those items have raw eggs in them. And we all know that raw eggs are chock full of salmonella and will kill you if not prepared correctly. If they haven't died...

    Did we kill my yeast!?!

A great example of RDWHAHB. Glad the yeasties are hard at work. :mug:

Supposed to have made a 6.5 gallon batch and ended up near 8.

I would guess that your OG will be lower than expected and the yeast my not have much to chomp on. What was your estimated and actual OG's?

    Using Dishwasher to sanitize?

Anyone have issues with bottle necks breaking when putting on the caps? I've heard that washing the bottles in water hot enough to sanitize can weaken the glass and cause the bottles to break when capping. I snapped one and figured I was just hulking on it too much. SWMBO broke one and I knew...

    Secondary Fermentation

I agree with this. After reading so much on here about pro-cons of a secondary I've stopped using them. Unless you have a reason to move the beer...don't. Let it sit in the primary until you bottle/keg it.

Advice for converting to outdoor propane brewing

I went with the KAB6 from NB. http://www.northernbrewer.com/shop/bayou-cooker-burner-and-stand.html Takes some getting used to but it works with larger kettles. I'm considering picking up another one and making stands for both to make the all-grain process a little easier.

    aerating/oxygenating- what's your method?

I use a Mix-Stir attached to the drill. Fits into the carboy. I usually run it on high speed for about 5 minutes. The wort can splash out if you get really crazy but it creates a nice vortex. A 'bubbler' system probably does a better job of aeration but I find any excuse I can to use...

    Dry Hop Question

Hop bag....over the end of the racking cane...to prevent sucking up hops, trub, unicorns, whatever. Friggin genius. Such a simple solution to the problem of unwanted stuff going into the secondary, bottling bucket, or keg. Why didn't I think of that?!?! I'm so glad I found this forum...

    Best use for Citra Hops

Great stuff in this thread on using Citra hops. I'll play around with this on my next IPA.

Brew Haulers in water. Are they 'seaworthy'?

Checking in with those of you that use Brew Haulers and put them in swamp coolers. I've read in one older thread where the Brew Haulers appear to hold up after being used in and out of water. Has anybody had any issues recently with them wearing out or falling apart after sitting in water...
